Hey so on my way home yesterday I had an idea come to me through a pain that I felt & one that I know many encounter all of the time. I was just watching sharktank and a different entry/execution came to me. That was putting school logo's on this product because I think that it was the simplest, easiest, and quickest way to get into the market and I think that the college consumers would love it. Now I remember a thread here where a fastlaner used school logos on a product and sold them on campuses. Might be wrong and misremembering. I made this thread to ask on if anyone here has used school logo's, are there any fee's you need to pay to use them, is there any consequence to using them. Really think this is a idea that I can execute well, and get running at a good scale. Even have a really good domain name I feel for it. If anyone has advice on use of logo's for college's or schools please let me know. This might sound a bit jumbled and vague so I apologize for that.

You would need to seek a license from the NCAA. Its a nice barrier to entry so don't let that stop you.

I see, I just looked into the cost and timing of it. I can definitely afford it, thank you for the tip! I think a test run would be helpful and small enough to not get me in trouble before I get the whole license. I just purchased the domain. If any of the longer tenured fastlaners wouldn't mind chatting I would love to shoot you a message and chat about my idea a bit more privately.

Just make sure that you do it the right way, like get permission and everything.

awhile back I had a website that had a ton of college logos on it. My site didn't get a lot of traffic, yet some of the schools still contacted me and asked me to take the logos down.

I learned that there are companies out there that are dedicated to finding sites and products that are using school logos without permission. Schools seem to take branding very serious.

Most schools go through the CLC, some through Fermata College. It's not quite as simple as just getting the license and then going to market.

They can be very controlling over what you can make and who you can sell it to. The company I used to work had their allowed products and accounts severely whittled down over the years. They were a good company that moved a lot of product, too.

So there is definitely an issue with control.

However, they are willing to let great product designs through, even from individuals. If you make something truly unique, they will help you. But trust me, they have enough companies just slapping logos on products.

Other notes: They usually only allow you to start local before approved for national scale. You need to have approved fulfillment and materials and all sorts of stuff.

It's a strong market though, go for it!

Some resources

CLC License info (links on left): http://www.clc.com/Licensing-Info.aspx

CLC Application: http://www.clc.com/getmedia/199ccae4-23e7-4d29-b593-d28db253dea8/CLC-License-Application

Fermata College: http://fermatacollege.com/wantlicense/

You need the specific license for the specific product type. For example, the company I worked for had the license to sell a limited number of shirts, but would have to apply for a completely different license to make posters.

Good luck!
