Do you promote your sites in the real world? We do.
Newspaper ads - tiny classifieds - These are pretty effective if you run them for several weeks in a row. One time doesn't seem to work. For us, it takes about 3 weeks before we start seeing results. Rates are cheap around here so it is easy to make money with them. If you want to try this, run them for 6 weeks at a time for testing purposes. Generally speaking, newspapers that people pay for will do better than free papers but test as many as you can to see what works for you.
Newspaper display ads - These don't do very well for us, we just barely break even with them. My ads might just suck, I don't know.
Flyers on bulletin boards. - These can be a mixed bag but overall we do well with them. You really have to put up a lot, however, 1 or 2 won't do it. Think hundreds. If you get everything just right with these, they can make a lot of sales. We drive all over the countryside putting them up sometimes.
Radio ads - Pure shit. We ran drive time ads for 6 weeks and made 0 sales. In retrospect, it was a dumb idea - who remembers a website when they are driving? Nobody, that's who. Thousands of dollars down the toilet. Ouch.
Door-to-door flyers - These either work well or fail miserably. When the weather is good we hand out several thousand a month. These are a lot of work but overall they are worthwhile. Hint: Find neighborhoods with lots of newspaper boxes, you can get out thousands a day that way. Hint 2: Make sure that the flyers are meaningful to the people you are delivering them to. Hint 3: Old people like flyers.
Business cards - I used to go through mountains of business cards but I could never attribute a sale to them so I don't really bother anymore.
This year I'm going to run a bunch of magazine ads and work on getting as much free publicity as possible (more on that later).
That's pretty much it.
