Pornography: Fastlane or Dead Business?

Hello, it's Matteo.

I introduce myself: I'm from Italy and I am a freelancer who deals with the creation of websites, photography and videomaking.

I mean, I'm doing this saving money, looking for a fastlane business: in the meantime I improve my skills.

I worked with SEO also, with excellent results. I did affiliate marketing too, but I did not go over hundreds bucks monthly. However, it was useful to learn the play rules.

From few months, an idea is making its way into my mind. I am trying to analyze it analytically, without being influenced by moralism or anything else.

And it is about pornography.

And the question is...is it a good Fastlane Business?

***

When I was a teenager I wachted it often, but now I seldom use it.

But, when I do it, I see what the market offers and I continue to see unexploited niches.

I know that many people say that the competition of free tube sites made the sector unprofitable. But, at the same time, when I surf on these free tube sites to look for more specific fetishes, I find nothing. Or I find low quality movies, did by unqualified people (I mean, no professional lights, not cinematic shots, absolutely nothing).

As long as I'm looking for something mainstream it's okay. But as soon as I look for something "particular" or "kinky" I only find video trailers made by great producers, which refer to their sites. Then, I have to go to paid sites.

The only solution would be to look for videos of these producers on pirated/torrent sites, which I do not do for obvious reasons.

What I mean? That there are some big players that do "particular" videos. And they do it in a professional way. And they are big. Just think to Kink or other specialized producers. Maybe they do not make as much money as they used to be in the last years, but they do it.

You want to see something particular? You must pay. Or you download it illegally (and this is the only obstacle that I see to take this way).

Offer is wide, but it's all very similar. It's like music business: there are many songs, but they all look alike.

But maybe if you offer something that fill a niche, you can satisfy a need. That people will pay, if they have that need. And if you can offer something that pushes people not to download, it may work.

Is like amazon. It is an e-commerce and it's mainstream. But this does not prevent the proliferation of small niche e-commerce that sell products that Amazon does not deal with.

I have the technical skill. It intrigues me. Do I should do it?

What do you think about? Somebody work in this type of business?

***

NO! IT'S A INFAMOUS BUSINESS AND YOU WILL FINISH IN THE HELL!!!!11!

Okay. Let's talk about the elephant in the room. I red this topic with much interest and the 90% of answers was about porn addiction, human trafficking, ecc.

1) Does the pornography addiction exists?

Yes. But the TV addiction too. Fast-food addiction too. Videogame addiction too. ecc. ecc. Everything cause addiction. Let's deal with it.

And, however, there are a lot of people that use pornography and they aren't addicted. My 2 cents.

2) The pornography is about human trafficking and prostitution!!!11!!!! Think to your daughter!!!11!

I think 90% of people worried about human trafficking have never talked to a prostitute or a lap dancer. Or, if they did, it was only by dispensing paternal advice on what she was doing wrong in her life, without listening to her true needs.

There are people who reject to work 8 hours a day until retirement at 60, so there are people who reject to do a "normal" job and choose something that excites them. Like the prostitute or the pornostar.

There are also people forced to do it? Yes, of course. But it's like drug trafficking: if there's a need, there are criminals who satisfy that need. The solution is never to prohibit or deny the problem, but to find suitable solutions. And this is not the place to talk about it.

There is a famous Italian producer who, before hiring actresses, asks them to wait a few years to figure out if this is what they really want to do in their lifes.

Solution isn't don't do the things. Is do the things in the right way.

Well, you've to estimate how much it would cost to hire the actress and actors, which I doubt will be cheap per video unless you hire amatuers (for females) and volunteers (for males). I feel this is the biggest barrier to entry. Probably need a ton of money to fund this in the beginning.

The only way I see to differentiate yourself from the rest is either to do a themed-based genre or really niche down within the sub-genres to create a new category, then dominate that category.

Then offer different pricing plans/packages and limit the content to the members based on this, but you need to provide a substantial amt of free content to bait the first batch of leads in.

In the book Dotcom secrets, the author was saying to create a value ladder. Meaning, offer a range of products (in your case, pricing plans) from low to high, then slowly upsell the existing customers to higher and higher priced products up at the higher end of the value ladder.

In addition, I find that with porn, there is a tendency for people/viewers to want to seek more and more intense videos because the current ones just don't cut it after a while. It's like drugs.
E.g.: the 90s "hardcore" genre are considered boring and too mild by today's standards, so I guess you gotta go big or go home.

With regard to moral values, I've seen the other thread here on pornography. Personally, there is nothing wrong as long as all actors and actresses involved are doing it willingly (e.g. not forced) and are of legal age.

There is a market, there is a need.
By providing it, you're filling a need and a want. It's all business.

In fact....it actually satisfies the CENTS principles well. Rather well, I say.

Business wise it's probably great because you almost gurantee repeat consumers, you only have to get them once.

i don't watch it nor do i condone others who watch it, but as a morally principled father to daughters, I disapprove of it. with that being said, you will have an ever thirsty and needy supply if not from the wetsern hemisphere, definitely from the East. Sex sells, and unfortunately, the proles (1984) whom represent 85-90% of the worlds populous will feed off porn because they have nothing else better to do. Id say its a decent business model, however like Xeon said, it would have to be some ridiculous niche based, fetishized based concept or else nobody would care less about what you are doing. Think of how everyone is jumping on the ASMR bandwagon on youtube. something like that (its just people talking softly, or people having sex yet again...) what can be differentiated at this point....

with this being said, i think the VR may come into affect somehow with feminism on the rise and western men giving up on women. A lot of the men here in scandinavia are heading far east (thailand, vietnam, phillippines) for their spouses.

Its all intrusive to culture, society and to an extent biology. Luckily i have had women in my life which has not led me to such usage as i can see how it can be addicting and problematic for many men (and women) that consume it on a weekly or even daily basis.

No wonder there seems to be a sudden sharp rise in the no. of said couples here in recent years!

Speaking of which, reminded me of 2 articles I came across today:

Women are being asked to record ‘consent videos’ before sex by men who are afraid they’ll be accused of rape or assault
Men Now Asking Women to Record ‘Consent Videos’ to Avoid Rape Accusations

What has society come to......

If you can attract subscribers, then it is a fastlane.

I like porn. And I like sex, masturbation, alcohol, pot, dirt bikes, roller coasters, and many other things. But I never went into excess and never had addictions to these things. There is value in all these things, if used in moderation. I would ignore the morality crowd, IMO, and follow your own moral compass.

this is ridiculous.

I hope this leads to worldwide interracial relations getting stronger. Becuase more and more men are going abroad to get thier spouses which can mean more opportunity

Thanks for the answers.

You hit the point: on the paper is a perfect Fastlane. And I think it could works, if you find the correct niche that is relevant for a large part of dissatisfied users. And if you can offer the right scale of value ladder too.

Pirated/torrent sites are an obstacle. But I think that if you regularly offer a valuable product it's not so big. I mean, people pay Netflix too for videos that could pirate.

I'm seriously thinking about it. :clench:

the only niches that dont exist- Successful communism and Feminist fare wage porn. Sadly the same group of people would tune into both.

There will always be free and pirated porn, but the market is so huge that there is still a plenty of room in it for good paid sites.

Building out a porn website is NOT fast lane. Building a platform is. Building a site where OTHER people make the content and you sell it is fastlane.

Examples of this are cam sites. Who do you think makes the real money? The girls or the company selling "tokens?"

Sites that let you make your own channel to sell content are also fastlane.

Making the content yourself requires a LOT of legal hurdles and you are constantly at risk.

One of my friends own a big fastlane website in this niche. When the FBI wanted to go after one of his content creators, my friend gives them that contact info and its not his problem anymore.

If you want to be the one holding the camera, or wearing it on your head, then that's your choice, but it's a slow lane business. You're time will always be a limitation.

People watch and read free stuff on the Internet (youtube, blogs, articles), but they still pay for Netflix, movies, pay-per-view fights, and even paper books. If you are good enough to sell things, then this is a fastlane.

If you are only hosting other people's stuff you are not creating content or controlling the quality of it. It is way too common. You want to compete with Pornhub or YouPorn? I wouldn't.

Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate it.

And the things you said are right; you have touched a good point. Your time is always linked to the production of contents, with all the inconveniences of the case. But untied from the sale.

It's an half victory. You can do it. And do money, if you have the right product. Sell it on your platform, as a site can be, where do you have the control.

Unfortunately I can't figure out how be a content aggregator and compete with big players.

But it is something to keep in mind. ;)

Wrong. Writers, singers, other multimedia authors -- all spend their time creating content. But they are not paid $50/hour for their work. If you sell millions, you make millions.

Good idea business wise. Try to attach a brand to it, you'll have loyal customers for sure. Beware of the scale of your target market since porn itself can branch out and be very diverse.I know that people won't mind paying a subscription to a service that allows them access to explicit material be it music, porn, games, etc. Just make sure it's your original material. It's all part of the entertainment industry which is so lucrative.

While I see the benefits of being a porn platform or content aggregator, the issue is that you need a shit ton of advertising (read: extreme investor funding) in the begining to pull this off. The advertising likely need to be done fast and furious, so that a ton of users/visitors are all concurrently uploading and downloading stuff within the same period, liking and leaving comments on the videos to further boost the engagement rate.

Otherwise you will have this issue where the platform is up, but there's only 8 visitors and 15 videos.....it wouldn't last.....

If I'm not wrong, this is how businesses built on this sort of decentralized biz model got their headstart (Uber, Amazon, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Dropbox....).

Btw OP, after reading ryanbleau's post earlier up in this thread, I got inspired and have a niche idea which might be too offensive to post here. I'm not sure if it has been done before, but if you're interested, PM me.
