Hey everyone, just signed up and finished reading the MFL. I just put in my 2 weeks notice at my corporate call center job. I've got a about 6 months of rent and bills covered but I'm a little freaked out about the whole idea. Obviously since I'm 31 I've worked my whole life and don't really know anything else.

Hoping you guys have some insight or can talk me off the ledge because frankly the whole thing has me scared shitless.

Jobs are a dime a dozen. You can always fall back to something as a safety net. What business ideas will you be working towards?

I quit work a little while ago also. I've got quite a bit of savings stashed away, so I'm not in too tight of a pinch.

Here's what I'm doing:

  1. Have a set bedtime and wake-up time. Treat your time like gold, and give yourself a real schedule.
  2. Take care of your body. Make sure that you don't skip gym time, as your body is the home for where you mind lives. Take great care of it.
  3. Minimize your expenses as much as possible. If your credit is good, start putting your NECESSARY expenses on a brand-new 0% interest credit card. Give yourself time for your business to cash flow positive, but take advantage of a bank giving you what amounts to a free loan.
  4. Get serious about what business you wish to select, then execute, execute, execute!
So what business do you want to get into?

Change is always scary in the beginning. If a challenge is not challenging enough then it's not worth taking up. Go ahead with boldness decide your field of business and go for it. You are courageous enough that you already decided to leave your job. Best of luck.

As @Vigilante says above, jobs are a dime a dozen, and the fact that you're covered for 6 months means if you need to you can always get another, so let that fact calm you somewhat. In fact you may find yourself getting another job to fund some amazing business idea you get, so don't sweat it.

In the meantime start tuning your mind to finding opportunity. The way you do that is to look for problems and pain points in business.

Start by looking at the structure in that call centre you work in, @Walter Hay who is a senior member of this forum was working for a (I believe) chemical cleaning company and worked out that he could provide a better product, so he quit and then set about learning how to make, market and distribute it (Grossly oversimplified).

You may not be able to solve the problem you come across yourself, however it will tune your mind into spotting opportunity. Another thing you can do is when you next buy something online, take a look at the 2 and 3 star reviews, see if you can spot any common complaints about the product, and then imagine how you'd solve that problem. In fact why wait? Go onto Amazon this evening, and start browsing, start with the last few items you've bought, especially if they're over $25.

This is what is meant by the term, there's opportunity everywhere, because each problem expressed by a consumer or a business is a potential opportunity to ride in and save the day with a solution, thus providing value and making yourself rich.

However not all problems are equal, sometimes you may solve a problem, however the market is so small, or too specialist or even impoverished, that there's little commercial value in solving it.

When you next go out to eat, look at how many tables there are, how full is it, what's the average spend of a customer? Then try and work out their overheads, from that work out their gross profits, of course it's all guesswork but that's not the point, you're starting to train your mind to think like an entrepreneur.

Lastly use this forum as a resource, there are so many nuggets of gold information on here. Start by searching for people who were in your situation and took the leap of faith you are about to. Use quit my job as a search term.

Also look at the Gold posts in general and start to imagine what business you might want to go into. Take your time, it's better to not know for awhile than to immediately jump into something you later regret. Also never be afraid to ask questions on here, nobody will be down on you for being a noob or asking stuff that's been asked before.

Most of all enjoy! This is the start of your journey, good luck, I look forward to reading your first progress/execution thread and most of all, welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forum. Having 6 months to focus on building a business is a great start. Make those 6 months count. Execute, execute, execute. Use the 6 months to your advantage. As said above, look for opportunities to solve problems, then come up with solutions. You will begin to recognize the ones that would fit you and those that won't.

Unpopular opinion here.....but I wouldn't quit the day job after reading MFL for several reasons.....

Yep--your job & past jobs are a freaking gold mine of ideas, because you have INSIDERS knowledge. Don't discount that knowledge as an asset.

Agree. Having no income while you try to figure out how to start a business creates stress & desperation, which cloud & poison your thinking. Use the day job to fund your business until the business can pay for itself & your living expenses, then quit so you can grow the business.

Ok a bit more information for clarification. I'm quitting because I dislike the job and let's be honest it's not going to get me to a life where I'm self sustaining.
I have funds saved, I also am jumping back to a previous bartending job I had to make some extra income but allow me to still have enough time to work towards a fastlane business.
I have a few ideas
1. Build a website that offers physical therapist and personal trainers to work hand in hand when a client wants to continue to improve their health after recovery from an injury
2. Have been chatting about opening a gym in my area with a niche approach I don't want to go into details too much.
3. Sell my body on the streets and charge a high premium because I'm jacked and sexy
4. Offer a chat line for people who need someone to talk to on the phone who is struggling and needs a listening ear or someone to bounce ideas off of.
Beyond that I am currently getting my mind tuned to finding needs and filling those needs

I'm sick of wasting time with jobs and have always wanted to create my own path. Now is that time and I just need to step up to the plate before I can get a hit.

If you're jacked and sexy, maybe you can contact some of the smaller start-up fitness brands on IG to offer to take pics with you using their products for a small fee. Quick extra money.

My book caused you to quit your job? Or was this brewing for a while?

Hey MJ! No it's been brewing since I started. The amount of work I do, asking clients for sales, providing services and making their days and lives better I'd be better off just doing that much work but where I directly benefit from the effort not given some shitty quarterly bonus for performance when I potentially made the company millions of dollars.

Your book just verified what my gut was already telling me.
