I’m writing this from my desk at 10:17am on a Tuesday. My desk is at home, 15 feet from the water overlooking Tampa bay.

View attachment IMG_0700.mov

It’s 76, light breeze, the sun is making me squint a little but it’s not too humid.

The 60 year old snowbirds walk by and ask if I’m visiting family.

When I pull up with a boat at the Warf in St. Pete during the weekday at noon with some other friends my age, I hear whispers of ‘daddy’s money’.

I used to do this stuff but have few friends. That was always a problem since who else lived near me who was my age who was a good influence and could do these things.

But now it’s different. Now I built up a group of likeminded brothers and I have people who are living the same kind of life I can call up anytime. Real friends.

Why is this possible? It is because of laziness.

I believe the only way to succeed is to be lazy.

I can take you back in time to when I had a job…I’m 29 now, it was 8 years ago.

I have been hired at every job I applied for.

I also have been fired from every job I have worked at.

I was always lazy.

I would smooth talk my way into doing nothing. I would take 40 bathroom breaks to text my girlfriend and go hide in the freezer at Safeway when it was hot out.

When I started my business, within a month I had other people working for me. Even when I had no money, on a random Wednesday when I had people working for me at a job site we were working on, I went to go relax by the lake and knew that I wanted to never really work again.

Something unlocked in my brain where I realized other people could do the work. Money comes in, money goes out. Work is requested, work gets done. But I had carved out a little area for myself where I did not do the work but got some of the money. I had erased myself from the uncomfortable equation of having to calculate how much work to get how much money. “I make $x per hour” or “I make $x per year” or “I make $x per job”. There was no “per”. It was not me anymore. Now I just had money without any of my own labor. It was like dividing by zero. It was like a contract with no consideration. This is the only way to ever have “free money”.

If you are not lazy you will always maximize your output by including yourself in a process.

I could make more money by working.

But by doing so I have placed myself as a bottleneck.

So ambition can actually hinder you.

You get caught up in a rhythm of work. M-F, everything is your job, long hours. More money means more hours. You are burnt out. Congrats.

I want to do nothing.

Then, naturally, all things must be done by “someone else”. The beautiful thing is that these “someone elses” are near infinite.

I have found something that seems to be true.

Not only is it beneficial to become successful by being lazy.

Not only does it improve your chances of success by being lazy.

But I argue it’s basically impossible without it, in some sense.

It is a tough pill to swallow. You must, without losing your mind, comfortably sit outside of the work and trust that it’s getting done. It’s hard to do this. Get a job, send someone to go do it, don’t check up or even get updates directly, and get paid, and trust it got done. It will be an exercise for you.

I heard a quote that I love to think about.

“Optimizing for improving your quality of life will necessarily improve your standard of living.
But optimizing for improving your standard of living will not necessarily improve your quality of life.” - idk who said that

Happy Tuesday guys.
