Even though I haven't seen her in 20 years, this loss has disturbed me something terrible. She never muttered a bad word about anyone and always had a smile. She was modest, came from wealth but didn't flaunt it like a lot of our classmates. You'll see from the article that a lot of events occurred in her life since high school, and no doubt impacted her outlook.
Her death is especially troubling now after reviewing her facebook updates which were very upbeat and light hearted with lots of "lol's" ... she hid her pain well.
During high school, I had volunteered for OPTS - Operation Prevention Teenage Suicide and the common theme among callers into the hotline was a deep, very inrooted depression that was well hidden. According to distressed callers, one of the biggest problems was that family members and friends had no idea about their "pain." (just an FYI - Highly distressed callers were immediately transfered to certified counselors)
Reaching out is a good way to keep tabs on those who might be considering suicide. Once a suicidal person reveals their thoughts and confides in someone then the possibility of their following through vastly diminishes.
