Not sure if this is in the right place but seemed ok to me. This is kind of winded story so appreciate your patience.
My wife and myself are looking at opening an American Style Tex-Mex shop in Kings Cross, Sydney and need financial assistance but can't go through normal channels. A little about us.
I grew up and lived in Vegas for 35yrs and the wife is from Europe but has Austalian citizenship. We met on the net about 17yrs ago and after traveling back and forth where married in 2000. In 2002 my wife's SLE flared up and she is what the call "uninsurable" in the states so we packed everything up and moved to Australia. Within 4 years and one miscarriage she went on dialysis do to renal failure. Do to the amount of antibodies, the SLE and her blood type she was on dialysis for 7 years. Australia finally started the pared exchange program and January 2013 I gave a kidney to someone and my wife received one.
The reason I mentioned all this is because it has financially destroyed us. I am getting up there in age and refuse to get into another job that I don't like and have to look out for our future. While at the local markets one day it dawned on me that the thing I love to do is cook and watch the reaction to on people faces while they eat the food I created. I don't have formal training but keep one motto in my mind and that is from my mother. She used to say "it isn't how you cook but knowing what recipe to cook". I love Tex-Mex and even authentic Mexican food and that is what we decided to try. Up until recently you couldn't get a lot of ingredients here and even now there are only a couple of places that sell raw pinto beans.. lol Pretty much all of our ingredients we use in our food are recipes that I have created and continue to fine tune.
About 2 years ago we put together a little stand and have learned and progressed over the past 2 years. We have learned from our mistakes which has allowed us to grow and make better business decisions. Approximately 60-70% of our customers are locals that we see on a weekly basis, other customers have visited or lived in the states and recognize the flavor immediately with a smile. We registered the business name and have a website along with a FB page and are not looking for a shop. This leads us to the financial problem.
We found a little shop in Kings Cross and not sure of all the details but basically it is fitted for our needs and the weekly rent is reasonable. With lawyers fees, cost of shop, signage, insurance and stock it would cost us in the range of $15,000. The regular channels are out of the question because we don't have collateral, co signer or enough assets to cover it. My wife wants to save for a couple of years but I question if we will ever be able to get enough and there is always the timing issue. Right now Mexican food is gaining steam here in Australia and people are opening shops without knowing anything about the product. In turn I here comments like "we tried it and didn't like it", I give them a sample and that changes there mind. We need help and any would be appreciated.
