Ferrari recalls supercar after fires
FERRARI has been forced into an embarrassing recall after a series of fires engulfed its new half-million-dollar supercar, the 458 Italia.
Five cars in Europe, the US and China have been written off by the problem, which has been traced to some components near the exhaust wilting under extreme heat.
Ferrari has been investigating the incidents after camera phone footage was posted on the internet within months of the car going on sale.
The carmaker issued a worldwide recall of all 1248 cars yesterday, including eight that have been delivered in Australia over the past two months.
The local distributor said all the Australian owners had been contacted and replacement parts were on the way.
"It's a quick fix under warranty and we'll have cars back to customers by the end of next week," spokesman Edward Rowe said.
He said the problem related to a heat shield in the wheel arch that had been attached with glue instead of rivets.
The cars that caught fire had been driven hard in extreme heat and there was no inherent problem with the model, which has a starting price of $526,950.
"The issue revolves around how one part was installed, rather than the design," Mr Rowe said.
The five 458 owners whose cars caught fire, from the US, China, France and Switzerland, will receive new cars.
However, the recall blights the introduction of an important car for the brand, and one that has been hailed as the best Ferrari for years.
