Did anyone else watch "Don't Look Up" on Netflix yet?
I barely watch anything on Netflix these days, but being down with a cold and bored of reading web3 shit, saw this as #1 and watched it. Surprised myself.
It's pretty damn good! I'd give it a 9/10.

I watched most of it and will finish, but I just felt tilted on the big money founder guys acting abilities. I know it was satire, but felt they could of done better with him.

Watched it a few days ago. If a comet ends up on a collision course with earth and we find out about it in advance, things will 100% play out like in that movie.

Great satire.

Just watched "don't look up". Excellent movie. It's more of a documentary than satire if you ask me. My wife figured it's based on events playing out close to real time lol.

One thing that really pissed me off is that Hollywood just had to take shots against Trump and Republicans throughout the whole movie. It's the entire political theater, not just one freaking side. And trump isn't even president, get over it. Other than those specific digs, it really was a solid movie.

I enjoyed it. It reminded me of idiocracy. Everyone is a total dumbass to their own detriment.

I also enjoyed how stupid it made government look. As someone that has worked closely with government, they really are just a smiling face on the shell of emptiness.

Of course after I enjoyed what I determined was a pretty libertarian message, I wake up to read an article about how it’s all about climate change or Covid.

So instead of a message that 97% of people in this world are total idiots, devoid of their own indepent thoughts, and instead walking billboard for one side’s manufactured bullshit vs another, I see that they are just shaming capitalism for something again. Damn. It had potential.

@Kak Your confirmation bias kicked in. That’s why you didn’t get the analogy over Trumps handling of the pandemic being portrayed as handling over “asteroid”. Same with @GPM - you can’t remove the key plot line. Nepotistic president who’s ignoring scientist’s comments to look good. Come on! They didn’t have to mention Trump for you to make that link. That’s what made the movie so good. The feeling of it so real.

The rest: social media, big tech, media’s focus on spinning the narrative. Just gold. Depressing… but gold. In the “funny because it’s true” kind.

Yes, I made the connection that the president was supposed to be Trumpesque.

But, I also made a connection that they are firing all the inconvenient scientists and the “company” (like Pfizer and Moderna) is running policy.

The difference is I didn’t want the government to “handle” the pandemic. It literally made everything worse. An asteroid would obviously require collaboration on a grand scale and government is already financially established. So maybe just maybe there would be some utility in common defense. But no lol.

Well, there you go!

We can agree that portrayal of the Trump administration was well done.
We can agree that big companies (tech and pharma) influence policy ("own" government's decisions by donation etc.).

And I hope that we can agree that it doesn't matter whether you think government should "handle" the pandemic or not. As long as there is government, they will "handle" it. The question is - how?

Most importantly, 97% (yes I make up statistics on the fly) of the population is preoccupied with watching dopamine inducing social media... WHO says it matters far more than WHAT is being said. The message is only important if it comes from someone with a big following. Merit of the message itself is lost. Asteroid or pandemic, no difference. You can't get to a truth. Truth exists, but neither you nor I can ever find or confirm it. This leads to the current polarization. Pro vax, anti mask, hate pharma, trust dumbass presidents, get your news from celebrities - all cause a divide in people based on their beliefs. The division and distrust was well covered in the movie.

It's depressingly accurate portrayal of the world the way I see it today.

The fact that they had to make a movie based on their version of trump blows my mind. Yes trump was a moron, but he was not even close to half of what the media said he was. Senile Brandon literally does the exact same things and somehow it is okay. There are so many images of his side-by-side tweets where he tried to make fun of trump for something and then does the same thing 10 months later.

Both sides of government (Canada is no better) are literally the same things. One is Budweiser, one is bud light. Both just imitation trash versions of what it should be.

The modern media can't even see how a movie like that is about them either. Big tech and pharma runs the government, science that follows the scientific method is destroyed and individuals run through the mud, the media gossips and twists to get the moron mass views... That is all real life and paralleled in the movie.

What does average joe and the media get out of it? Durrrrrrr Trump lol orange man bad.

I enjoyed the movie. Found it disturbing, probably because it mirrors life in so many ways. The movie itself is a capitalization on a modern addiction to depression. I like to feel depressed, so I hope that doesn't come across like I'm accusing others of something I do not participate in. I find it an indulgence. Like good vodka or cheesecake, another human emotion. A little goes a long way. Too much is a problem haha.

It's interesting to think about how I feel after watching movies like this. How did it make me feel and what does that say about our culture? Also, what is truth and does it even matter? Comet. Suicide. Old age. It all still ends in cold black death. I would prefer a cool death by hot comet over many other types of death, except I would hate to think about my daughter's imminent death too. I suppose that is where the moral of the story comes into play near the end.

I didn't find the movie funny at all, but an entirely sad reflection on humanity. Satire? More like reality, or one degree away from it.

I found the metaphor of the comet being likened to a pandemic (or climate change) as a non-sequitur, especially since scientists who speak out against the VAX or the CV hysteria are the ones being censored and banished. They're the ones screaming, "look up, your eyes aren't deceiving you." It seems this film got it backwards.

And of course, they couldn't waste the opportunity to lambaste a former president (and I'm guessing millions of those who voted for him) while ignoring the senile puppet currently presiding. There's some truth to demonstrating government incompetence, but we know in Hollywood that this is always dependent on "who" is currently running the government and having the right letter next to your name. So of course, they had to make it about Trump and those evil (R)s and his redneck followers, leaving you with the presumption that the current admin is completely sane and competent-- it just was the last one that was bad. Give me a break.

And then throw in the megalomaniac capitalist (oh those evil capitalists again!) who probably drinks his own urine for breakfast, he don't care about the planet, but only the maximization of profit. Gee, we haven't seen that since, what, the last Hollywood movie released four days ago? More socialist dog whistles... it's tiresome.

The only thing this movie pinned accurately was that most of the world are morons following morons simply because they're on TV or have a large following. And that if you want any truth in your life, you're on your own.

well since this thread exists now, this movie is obviously propaganda because every mainstream movie serves a political purpose.

I still enjoyed the movie though

I thought it was one of the funniest movies I have watched in a long time. Really enjoyed it too. The reaction to it and the various ways it has been interpreted based on your previously held beliefs is quite something to behold.

I watched it and came to a number of conclusions about what the movie represents or the story it was trying to tell.. my sister watched it.. my brother, my mother, my father, friends and now you guys here on the forum. Each person took something completely different from it.

first 15-30 minutes were ok, but after that the movie just dragged on and was really lame.

well since this thread exists now, this movie is obviously propaganda because every mainstream movie serves a political purpose.

Yes, clearly analogous to climate change since it features DiCaprio, an ardent private-jetting, meat-eating climate activist. The best propaganda doesn't feel like propaganda, but entertainment, where behind the scenes people are being subconsciously softened to some type of agenda or cognitive programming, whether it be that gun owners are redneck imbeciles, the evils of billionaire entrepreneurs, or milquetoast socialism.

This movie reminds me of another Netflix film which borders on political propaganda, The Social Dilemma. Instead of focusing on how social media is destroying the lives of young people, they focused on how it has become a conduit for "fake news" and "hate" which serves as an impetus for gun violence. In other words, social media is great until you start thinking for yourself and question authority. And when you do that, you're likely to buy a gun and go crazy.

I've already lost faith in humanity, I'm sure this won't help.
I was just talking with my wife the other day about how all of the student loan debt is being forgiven which we are irate over. It took 20 years to pay off her four-year college loan and now the government is just going to forgive it for the younger voting crowd. I told her they're just making younger people more prone to expect everything to be given to them and convincing them that that is what socialism actually is.
