I’m 19 years old and, I’ve been on this forum for a little bit now, and I’ve been thinking of different scalable business ideas. What’s your take on an online personal training business? I’m certified and was thinking of starting in my local area doing in person training and then building a base to go online with. I’ve made a website to help with the process of getting my name out there.

My concern is the barrier of entry not being the highest and the competition in the field being so large. Can good marketing overcome that? Between that and really going at building up my instagram following. Thank you in advance Any ideas help

Great marketing only makes a bad product fail faster.
— David Ogilvy

You can't cheat barrier to entry. You either compete with the masses of other personal trainers and be the best or you'll learn a valuable lesson on what not to do.

Questions:
  • Is there a need for yet another personal trainer?
  • Is there a need for a personal trainer online?
  • Who is your current competition?
  • How are you better than your competition?

That's not to say you can't make money doing personal training. Fill your boots - go to a local gym, pay them a cut from customers you get and see if you are cut out to be the best. Then you may be able to charge premium for your time. Then maybe you develop a unique product based on what you see your clients needs but can't get anywhere. Or 10x improve an existing product offering, some online program or video or ____ who knows...

I really do appreciate your advice on that. That barrier of entry really looks like a coffin. I’ll try my hand at a local gym working with people and see how desired my service is. And just keep the rose tinted glasses away lol

There are a lot of high entry barrier problems to be solved in the fitness industry.

It really depends on what you are doing. If you are solving a problem that is hard enough.

Better fat measuring tools, affordable cooked chicken breast for busy office workers, calories expenditure measuring device tied to the leg.

I completely agree with this.

I'm an aspiring bodybuilder myself, and my eventual goal is to build a small online business of coaching clients. You are absolutely your best marketing.

Sell me why I should pay for your services over someone else.

You either:
1.
Need to offer me an easy solution to my unique problem (hashimotos, diabetes, food allergy) and prove that you've overcome it yourself.
OR
2. You need to be in better shape than damn near 99% of people, especially to compete in an online appearance-based space.

I find those the only two possible ways to make an income online as a fitness coach. Maybe you can land upon a better idea but I haven't managed to. For the time being, if you truly want to make money now, I suggest you advertise your services locally and in-person.
