Short version: Need a lawyer in the Chicago area to represent somebody that lives in FL. Identity theft is clear here but she needs legal representation in Illinois to settle everything.
Long version:
A relative had her purse stolen three years ago in FL (broke her car window and stole everything inside). She made the police report.
Two weeks ago she got a couple of letters from law firms from the Chicago area offering their services to represent her in that case she had pending.
For some reason she decided to call one of them (I'd had probably just thrown away the letters, specially if you have never been to Chicago anyway). The guy that picked up the phone said they simply mailed the people whose names showed up in the records from the courthouse. He was kind enough to find for her the phone number for the courthouse.
My relative called to find out what was that about and the clerk told her she was in trouble and that she should talk to a lawyer or the police in FL as there was a warrant in her name and a $100,000 bond was set.
She went to the police to ask about what was going on and, after a couple of days of talking to them and, thank God, to a lawyer, she got arrested last Friday and talked to the judge in FL. The bond was set as $0 and she went home that night.
The FL judge and the D.A. in Illinois think there is a really small chance she will be asked in extradition but the detective that is handling the case did not want to give many details unless she is present in Illinois. Of course she has decided to fight the extradition order but the detective probably thinks he is a super star and wants her arrested back in Chicago (or, actually, Cook County, if I recall correctly).
So, the idea is to find a lawyer in the Chicago area to represent her over there and, hopefully, have the judge dismiss the case rather quickly.
Oh, by the way, the charges are "Robbery" and the only proof they have is her driver's license. She has never been in that area.
In any case, I am looking for a referral for a lawyer that can handle this case, that is somebody my relative can trust and you have direct experience working with.
