If you have been on the downward spiral and have hit very rock bottom, and decided you want to change, this is how you do it.
Skills. That's what you need to be able to do anything. And the skill to trump all skills is the skill of creating a habit. You've heard MJ and other fast-laners talking about process, and habits, and lifestyles, and most importantly, taking action, but how do you actually go about creating a habit that stick and not fail halfway through like your typical new years resolution?
1. Start with ONE
Focus. If your whole life is a mess, start fixing ONE thing. For example, you might be F*cking yourself over by going to sleep at different times every single day, so set an alarm at the same time FOR EVERY SINGLE F*ckING DAY and when you hear that alarm, ditch everything asap and lights out. How easy is that? You literally just have to do this one single thing first. You can do anything you want with the rest of your time, it doesn't matter at all but make sure to stick to this one single thing. [Bonus] Inversely, set an alarm to wake up at the same time everyday after you have successfully gone to bed at the same time everyday. (More on that later)
Done? Congratulations, you have officially improve the quality of one third of your life to a level that is better than 90% of other people. Also, you have given your discipline muscle a good workout.
2. Progressions and Making Failing Impossible
Ever watched one of those Arnold Schwarzenegger inspirational videos, feel super pumped to do all kinds of awesome shits, then go to sleep and feel like a steaming heap of crap the very next day? WHY DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE DIFFERENT THIS TIME? Inspiration is a spark, it's what you might need to get the fire started but you're not going to barbecue your metaphorical chicken with that weak sauce. What you need are coals, red hot coals. Sticking with the fire analogy, when you want to start a campfire, you don't just stack giant logs on top of each other then light a spark, hoping it would catch on fire. What you want to do is to progressively feed larger and larger pieces of fuel into the flame. Same goes with habits.
If you've successfully fixed your sleep habit, and stuck with it for at least a month, well the next step is to chain it to something SMALL. Note that the emphasis is on small. Why?
Because it doesn't matter if it's small, as long as you don't give up, your good habits train is just going to get longer and longer. However, If you try to incorporate something too big, you are more likely to fail, and when you fail, you feel like a piece of shit, and chances are, you might give up and all the momentum you've built up so far will disintegrate, again.
So, if you have good sleep habits already, and you want to improve in something like your body fat percentage, you might chain that to having a protein shake ready to go as soon as you wake up right next to your bed (a la Tim Ferris). Or go for a walk, or anything really, as long as it moves you a millimeter towards your goal. The key is to have really small achievable goals so you just build up more and more confidence and discipline and make it impossible to fail. We're all suck when just starting out, give it time.
3. Repeat Step 2 Ad Infinitum
Trust in the process. If you have ever grown plants or something, you would know that everything in nature takes time. You might wanna scream at your plants to hurry the F*ck up but in the end, that never works. If you just forget about it, one day you will wake up and find that it's grown way beyond your expectations.
Hope this helps you guys who are just starting out on your journey. I've had to restart recently and have to re-learn this skill, just wanted to share them with all you beautiful people. This is the process which I have used for learning anything and have had the most success with. I hope this will help you as much as it has helped me.
