IYO: Is Licensing Slow Lane or Fast Lane?

I have a brand I'm trying to build in an existing market. I figured I would co-brand with an existing brand and go the licensing route. The license acquisition process went fairly smoothly for my first license, but sales have been hard to come by. I understand ultimately a company would like to be at the point of licensing their OWN brand name, which would be very fast-lane, but I figured this was a good start. I also understand a big part of licensing is getting attached with a good brand, but for a start-up brand making the jump to a huge brand can be financially straining. Now I have upcoming guarantees to fulfill and I also have to add a pretty hefty amount in order to recover royalties.

Do you think going the licensing route slowed me down? Or do you think it can be potentially "fast lane"?

Does anyone have experience with licensing? Is there a route to take that is more successful than others?
