Is this a wise marketing/advertising move?

Whats up guys!

Basically, I started a website that is using "Simple Machines Forum", however, I thought to myself "I love the functionality, I will learn something new if I have to, but can I make my idea work with this!?"

And it just so happened that somebody was creating a modification that satisfied my needs.

Essentially, my website is meant for advertising, but not in the standard way.

For instance, say I were to come on here and post a link (This or 99% of the other sites out there), I would be told "Hold the phone partner. You have zero posts and you wanna just come in here, spam your sites, and leave? Nah, not happening"


Now, mine is different. You register, you post your site, people can come on and rate it, and it is WIN WIN.

I get traffic, and if I get traffic- so does every other link on the site. A little perk I have now, is free advertising. I've asked numerous people if they want the free ad spot on the front page of my site, and so far- no takers.

I've been told that it looks too much like a forum, but to me its just categorized. Realistically, it doesn't matter what I think, because I could like the design but that could cause it not to sell or gain traffic!

Also, my Uncle owns an enormous news paper. Would advertising in that be a solid plan, I kind of hate using people who have already made their rounds in the fast lane because it makes me feel like I am doing less work, if that makes sense.

I know you can advertise in pretty much any way...but only some will look professional and not sketchy.
