Hey everyone,
Been reading MJ's books and following the forum from a distance for years. Finally decided to join.
My background is a bit unusual. I started with an accounting background in undergrad, later did an MBA, and then deliberately chose sales. I'm naturally more introverted, but I always wanted to understand business from the front lines and figured sales would force me to learn.
I spent about two years in corporate sales across a consumer goods company and an internet company. The biggest lesson wasn't how to sell. It was learning how difficult it is to part people from their money. Most people are skeptical, distracted, comfortable with the status quo, or simply don't care.
I also learned something else that surprised me. In large established companies, sales can become somewhat commoditized because a lot of the heavy lifting is done by the brand, distribution network, and reputation that have already been built. It made me appreciate the difference between selling for an established company and building something from scratch where nobody knows who you are.
Over the last year I wrote three books simultaneously. Looking back, it was probably more ambitious than necessary, but I wanted to see if I could pull it off. All three are currently in the final editing phase.
Now I'm trying to figure out everything that comes after writing: positioning, covers, publishing, marketing, distribution, and getting actual readers.
One thing I've realized is that writing a book can feel productive in isolation. Getting strangers to notice it, trust it, and pay for it is a completely different challenge.
Looking forward to learning from people who have built businesses, launched products, and survived the mistakes that come with it.
Thanks.
