I just got a last minute invite to Dallas, Texas, in a couple of days time for the wedding of a business acquaintance and for a couple of meetings.

Having never been to that part of the states before I was considering hiring a car and hitting the road in order to clear my head and get away from it all. I had an initial look for things to see and do, but I can't really see anything that particuarly catches my eye apart from going to see a bit of sport. No obvious areas of natural beauty etc to get away from it all. I quite like driving long distances on open roads, as it's so completely different from here in the UK, so long distances within reason are fine with me.

So my question to you natives of the US is... Am I missing something obvious here? Would you reccomend anything in particular? Or... Am I best skipping over the border (or flying) to Mexico to see some Mayan ruins, or even heading to another nearby state? I assumed there would be 101 things to see and do and can't help wondering I'm missing something obvious here.

If you are in East TX, New Orleans is not that far of a drive. If you have never been, New Orleans is a must see. If you like to gamble, you could also visit Biloxi, MS. Not too much to see in TX though. I have driven across TX a couple of times and it isn't much to see. Austin is a cool town to visit if you are in that area though.

The Mayan ruins near Cancun are pretty cool and that is a short flight from anywhere in TX.

Maybe a road trip to New Orleans and Biloxi is on the cards then.

What's the gambling in Biloxi like? Never really heard of it except in passing to be honest. Is it all terrible Vegas style 6:5 Blackjack, or is their a chance of real games out there? Are the casinos good quality? Good shows/food/entertainment?

Honestly, I'm not much of a gambler, but Biloxi is the best the southeast US has for gambling. It is nothing like Vegas for sure, but you can find most any card game you want.

New Orleans is the entertainment and food. Just walking down Bourbon street is a show. But there are shows there as well.

I think the plan is now just for a quick road trip to New Orleans as a couple of friends, also from the UK, are going to join me. Also going to head to Austin as I heard the live music scene is good down there.

Mexico will have to wait.

Austin is your best bet for live music. On your way there is a cavern around Georgetown somewhere off of I35 south on the right, but cant think of the name of it. Worth the stop if you have never been underground. Dallas area other than sports, and shopping, not much happening. If you like the ocean and fishing Corpus Christi is a nice place to hang out for a day or two. Stay away from Houston and Galveston, Beaches suck. San Antonio is pretty cool but not really anything to do but bar hop on the Riverwalk. I know you don't mind driving but from Dallas you can drive 8 hours West or South and still be in Texas.

Not a whole lot going on in Dallas at all. Maybe a drive to San Antonio to see the Alamo and Riverwalk? (4 hour drive from Dallas). Check out 6th street in Austin and check out the music scene? (3 hours drive from Dallas). I would only go to Austin on the weekends. It's pretty dead during the weekday and not much going on. Thursdays are OK. Weekends are a whole other story. It's a total party with the street and bars full of hot/drunk college girls and all types of different music can be found.

The drive from Dallas to New Orleans is about 8 hours.

Eat some Texas BBQ.
