I want to purchase a domain that is parked

I wanted to purchase a domain, but it links me to a GoDaddy website saying that "This web site is parked FREE, courtesy of GoDaddy.com". They offer me a backorder, so does that mean someone has rights to the site already, or do I have to spend extra money to purchase it from GoDaddy? I don't plan on utilizing the site just yet, but figured I'd take the domain since it's an idea at work in my head.

Check the Whois contact the current buyer, but before you do that make sure you do the homework and know what its worth. It may only be valuable to pay the money it may be worth if you have a business plan attached that will make that money back and increase the value of the domain, otherwise you may just be buying speculation.

Just checked it, it's owned by someone already. I don't have a business plan in mind but I did have an idea as to what I wanted to do with this web site. Back to the drawing board. Thanks for the help everyone.

You could try and email the person and see if they are willing to sell you the domain. If the person is just parking the domain with Godaddy they may be willing to sell it for a small price over the registration costs.

You should also check it periodically and see if it is dropped. One of the domains that I wanted was registered and parked at Godaddy. I sent them and email but they did not respond to me about 8 months later I checked the domain and they had let it go.

See how long they registered it. If they only registered it for a year, they are obviously not that serious about it. Send them an email and make an offer.

Great idea. I did a WHOIS and found that the domain will expire in February. In that case I'll shoot over an email and see what the offer is.
