this is what I wrote in response to it but then I thought.. maybe I’ll just post a new thread somewhere slightly less conspicuous.
This was beautiful to read. It’s 4am here. I’ve been up all night learning business strategies and my fancy new computer (that I just opened) has a bug.. listen with grace, please.
I think MJ will be encouraged. Maybe.
Backstory:
I’ve been active daily from 2013-2017 on a forum COMPLETELY dominated by women who are stay-at-home moms. I think there’s maybe three males. The forum has over 4k members. The forum I’m apart of got its roots almost 20 yrs ago. They originally “met” on Yahoo groups. This year me and my close friends (we met on the forum, at events, and then texted) slowly started drifting away from the constant daily (multiple x a day) posting method to being active in one or two subsections. Now, most of us check into the forum at least once a week but not more than once a day.
You see, we have internalized the PRINCIPLES that our forum and its leaders/books suggest. Talking about those ideas was mind blowing AT FIRST but now we’re very busy implementing them.
My forum (let’s call it H) is not for profit. They do it all for FREE. Amazon links in their resource pages pay for their costs. That’s it. I’m sharing just to prove that people can do a lot when they’re motivated. H charges for their yearly event but it’s only to cover room and food. There are groups all over the world reading the Principle books and meeting to discuss things. H wanted to hold events but the price tag was ridiculous, just like MJ says.Who the hell needs that much coffee at $70 a gallon? And then..these women aren’t like you all. Imagine getting ppl with very little income AND SMALL CHILDREN to fly across the country? Unlikely, you’d think.
And yet.. their first event had 150 ppl. It sold out in one day. The second would not be held for another three years. It too sold out. 300 ppl. And again. This year, I think they sold out in less than fifteen hours. 500 ppl. I’m telling you this to show that the engagement is high.
“H” has an active Facebook group but nowhere near 150k and.. the Old Guard.. LOATHES it. Meanwhile every newbie who finds out about the principles jumps on fb and tries to teach or debate. It’s annoying. I never go there. A few moderators stay on it pretty obsessively but .. it’s mostly run by newer ppl. However.. it’s still vital to the aim. The goal of H isn’t to get acclaim or make money, its to promote life-changing education. Which it does.
Truly. Women from all over the world are currently, and I mean right this minute, discussing authors most Americans don’t even know exist. Plutarch, Tocqueville, Adler.. sigh. Not to mention Shakespeare, Cervantes, Austen, and Homer. These women, women I love, are seeking wisdom every day and discussing it constantly on the forum.. precisely because the Forum lends itself to REAL DISCUSSION.

Imagine my joy when I found Fastlane. It was like discovering the male version of H, the super honest, ballsy, money-making spot for WISDOM. You all are wonderful. Yes, you have your trolls, your silly side, your stupid questions from newbies.. and your assholes.. BUT the WISDOM!! It’s priceless.
Whether or not this year’s event occurs is not going to stop the growth of the Fastlane Principles. Yes, this forum might need an overhaul, better meeting systems, better pm possibilities.. or what have you..but the principles MJ is sharing are valuable and they will keep growing. Somehow.
A few years ago activity on my forum, H, was very low. We changed all that by adding one thing.. which changed everything. I don’t know if there are enough dedicated, vulnerable, honest men on Fastlane to replicate what we did but there might be.. so I took an hour writing this post and explaining my experiences to share that idea.
We added book discussions. Sounds simple right?
They’re not driven by admin but by regular users on H. Book discussions are moderated heavily to confirm to forum rules. ANY NEWBIE can and does feel confident to ask about starting a new book. Every week at least five if not seven SEPARATE books are being discussed, slowly, sometimes only a chapter at a time. I think Fastlane ppl would prolly want to up the speed..
My point is, the book discussions on H are FASCINATING and people who are on the fb come in to participate while The Old Guard gets to debate and make INSIDERS jokes.. and oh gosh I hope I’m not botching this..
Sometimes the book discussions are boring af. It happens. But usually the person who posts in the Book Discussion section says something to the effect of “I want to start reading Waverly. (Or The Iliad or Middlemarch or Silas Mariner or Faust) Anybody interested? Here’s my idea of a weekly schedule. We can start at the beginning of the month” (or next week or whatever) and then ppl join in. It gives ppl a place to discuss ideas and not attack each other. We share stories from our life to support our opinion. We laugh. We get into arguments about the best way to approach things.. but most importantly we connect ideas and grow.
We almost always discuss a book which includes some, if not all, of the principles too.. and a few self-help books have come in occasionally.. but mostly these are all classics. You guys would prolly love The Iliad. So much. Check out Fables translation!! Helen was a slut! Anyhoo..
What if you guys started three book discussions in January at a SLOW pace for ppl to join in or re read The Fastlane Millionaire or Unscripted ? Almost instantaneously you’d have a HUGE amount of people wanting to comment but I guarantee (if you’re only allowed to comment on 2-3 chapters a week) by the end of the first month you’ll have yourself a solid group of real people who want to develop their own understanding of important concepts.
This idea might seem incredibly naive and yet.. it worked for us. Amazingly well.
Just thought I’d share. HTH.
