Having been inside a 16 turret, those are some seriously big rifles. Its also an armoured box so the sound from firing the thing must just vibrate around inside. Any of the guys in the turrets must have lost their hearing.
Its hard to imagin how big these turrets are without seeing them..I mean 5in are pretty bit. Most modern warships use 5in or smaller rifles. On a battleship the 5in doubles are the small guns, toys really compared to these... 16's...well if your thin you can crawl up the barrel...
What you don't see is whats below the decks. Its freaken huge, room after room of powder storage and shell storage. I got lost a bit in that area of the ship it was so big, just deck after deck. As soon as you get below the armour belt its all powder storage. Hard to escape from if the ship gets hit...but your dead either way if that much powder ignites, so the didn't really design the thing so you could get out fast, no point.
Seeing a navel battle must have been something. Ships in a line, enemy ships blasting away, enemy aircraft giving the quad 40mm bofers a go, and 20's lighting up if the get close. I talked with a vet, he said they didn't worry when the 5's got into action, that ment the aircraft were pretty far out, its when the 40's lit up that they knew they were close.
