Hey guys, I just wanted to show you that it's possible to make money anytime you want with some dedicated HUSTLE with an example from the past weekend. This especially goes for the YOUNGSTERS on this forum such as myself (I'm 19). No excuses!

So, I've been buying and selling since I was maybe 15 or 16, I really don't remember, I've repeated this process many times with success.

I made about $300 dollars for about 2 hours of work over the past weekend. (I make this much every WEEK at my current job.) Just from finding an item on Craigslist and reselling on eBay.

Tips for finding items to resell on Craigslist: Look at items in a market you already know! For me this is all sorts of photography/film equipment as I wanted to be a filmmaker prior to wanting to go "fastlane". If you know bikes, look for bike stuff. If you know video games, look for video gaming related items.
If you don't know anything, then pick a category and familiarize yourself with it. Familiarize yourself with typical prices, typical higher priced brands, train yourself to see an items value when you look at it.

I had some downtime at my job, so I hopped on Craigslist and found this in a matter of minutes.

Note that this post is about a month old. This is a little technique of mine that I'm revealing to you. The older the post is, the higher there is of a chance of them accepting a low ball offer. Or at least rebutting it to something close to your offer.

The first thing you have to do when you think you have found an item of value, is to price check it on
eBay. EBAY IS THE UNIVERSAL PRICE CHECKER, always reference eBay for the value.
You know when you go to a pawn shop to sell an item, and they click some keys on the keyboard, looking on their screen before giving you an offer? They don't have some sort of internal coded price checker. They are checking
EBAY.

Untitled.png

In this case, the item price ranged from around $400-$550 depending on condition. I figured being a US seller, with the condition on the Craigslist ad seeming pretty good, could get around $400ish. So I took a chance and gave a low ball offer of $200.

And, guess WHAT. She accepted immediately . No counter offer. This does not always happen, but it occasionally does. I was expecting a counter offer of maybe $250-$300, which I would have counter offered depending on what it was, because I would still be able to make money.
16117236_871516049657813_703936994_n.png

About a 45 minute drive later, I was at her house, and you know what she said to me?
"I've had it on Craigslist for so long, I even forgot about it. So the first person who offered me some decent cash, I was willing to take."

This was confirmation for me that my technique actually holds some weight. Most people think the same thing with their old Craigslist posts.

Don't worry though, I don't just do this for older posts.
You can also find an "incorrectly" priced item on Craigslist as well. Simply put, an item that has been priced way lower than it's true (ebay) value.
All you do is buy it (always give a lower offer first), and put it up on eBay. This was covered in the Craigslist thread somewhere on this forum.

I posted the lens on eBay a couple hours later. One and a half days later - boom.

16111795_871516072991144_350720865_n.png

PROFIT$!!!!

This is NOT my only time doing this, I have repeated this multiple times, with ANY cash amount.
(examples)
Buy an item for $50, sell for $120
Buy an item for $75, sell for $150
Buy an item for $25, sell for $50
You don't always need to make 100% back either, I've made anywhere from 25% to 200%+ profit on items.

You can start small, make some money, and then go straight back to Craigslist to turn that money into more money.
I've done it soooo many times over the years, this has saved my a$$ multiple times between jobs, or just when I want to hustle it out when I actually have a job and want to turn my fixed income into more income.

There are always items to flip, no matter your location. If someone dropped my in another state right now, I could replicate it again. No matter where you are, there are items you can flip.

Don't use excuses, go out and HUSTLE.

P.S.
I've done this not only with Craigslist, but with garage sales, and neighborhood sales as well. You will not BELIEVE the items of value you can find at a garage sale and with even typically lower prices than Craigslist. People practically give their shit away. There are literally garage sale pro's who go out every weekend with a truck and stock on items to resell.
Take a Saturday morning, bring some cash, and go crazy. I've made hundreds doing this. No lie.

The only thing is, you didn't really make $300 profit did you? ebay is taking at least $67 of that sale not to mention the money it cost you in gas and to ship...

according to the rules (and it does appear to be true) ebay takes 10% of the total money made (shipping is no longer exempt) and that's on top of the percentage they already take with paypal. Honestly it's so high that I don't really think it's worth to sell certain things there anymore. 10% is bloodsucking!

So with this said, does anyone have any suggestions for other places that are actually viable to sell on? For my product there is actually a nice forum I have found to sell on and people there even generally pay more than eBay prices to make sure that the item is good quality and coming form someone they trust, but I would like more options.

You're right. eBay fees can be a pain in the a$$ sometimes.

I tend to not really worry about it though, because I'm constantly flipping items, and have a work income coming in.
As long I keep coming out on top with profit, and see my business cash reserve growing, I'm good.

Now of course when I start getting some of my imported items in, I'll account for every penny. This is just a way for me to hustle up some cash for my real business.

You're right about using specialized forums, that can work. I just focus on speed, and eBay is the fastest for me.

How do you get your listings to appear as a new seller? I currently have one listing but it doesn't appear anywhere.

Okay, so eBay takes 10% + 2.9% + 30c for Paypal. Maybe $30 for gas and shipping? So if he sold it for $510, that still leaves about $415. He paid $200. So $215 profit over 2 hours still is $107.50 an hour.

I used to do this stuff and have flipped items for at least this amount of money before. When you deal with more expensive items, trust me...you're happy to pay for the convenience of selling on eBay or Amazon.

You don't have to worry about driving and meeting someone, can get rid of it quickly (you don't want money tied up long with this - a quick turnover rate is more important than 10% of profits), and perhaps most importantly you don't have to deal with large sums of cash with strangers, where you can get ripped off very easily if you're not careful.

Not all items you flip will have the margins to list on eBay, but if you can (like in this case), it's well worth the convenience, security, and speed of selling the item. I'm just saying don't ignore these factors - they're very important

In the UK ( Not sure about the US) there is a separate page on FaceBook for people who want to sell things in their local area. People will usually sell for 25%-50% bellow market value. All you have to do is make an offer, buy the product, and list it on Ebay. Profit.

You could EASY make 4-5 figures doing this within a few months.

You could even specialise in a specific area and be known as "the guy" who sells camera lenses in your area. Its a good and fairly easy hustle to get started and build a decent amount of capital.

Nice write up, this is not just for teens btw. There are a lot of people on here who are not teens who will find this very useful.

Remember that ol' cliche "time is money"? Well, it applies here. How?

While you're pixel-peeping his method, chances are that in the time it takes you to eventually sell your item on that forum, he sells 2 on ebay.
As in, he cycles through the process twice.

So, if he makes a profit of $200 x 2 in a week, and you make the full $300 on the same item in 1 week, I think he is ahead.
Sometimes, you have to sacrifice a bit of profit for increased output and efficiency.

I kept fees out for the sake of simplicity.

I always know, and have the fees in the back of my mind.
I just do the quick math in my head and if I know I'm going to be making decent profit, even with the fees, then I'm good.

I'm constantly flipping items, so the speed of eBay is worth the hit of the fees for me.

Btw, I drive a 97 4 cylinder Camry (Stick shift). That thing is a gas sipper. Focusing on gas and all those details just slows me down. As long as I'm making profit, I'm good.

I use this to fund my real business, where I will actually be meticulous.

This is definitely true in a lot of cases, however I live way the hell out in the country. It takes over 30 mins to get to the post, and I can only go once a week. For me that 10% is game breaking. My first few have actually sold in the first couple of days on the forum and for more than they would have gone on ebay.

I'll try to give an example. I bought a 'lot' of the product on ebay. 25$ for 6 pieces. I sold one of the product on the forum for $15 a little over 3 of that will be shipping. selling on ebay I'd be lucky to get it to sell for $10, and if I could after fees + shipping I will be left with around 5$. That leaves me with like a dollar :/ That's not including the cost in gas and time cleaning up, taking pictures, etc.

Great post, some good tips, especially about the age of the Craigslist listing. I've been doing this with bikes in my area for about a year now, I've had a couple flops but I'm getting the hang of it. Spot on tactics though!

Perhaps, you should have specified that it isn't viable in your own unique circumstances. Rather than attempt to crunch his numbers as evidence of non-viability.

If you have a forum with quick turnover, then that's nice.
I'm no fan of ebay fees or ebay as a company, for that matter. However, sometimes, the devil you know.. and such and such.

I like this style of hustle. My friend had this idea a few years ago and asked me to hustle with him... man, we bought stuff from the whole city until the pool was empty haha
We did nearly exactly the same method as you and it was a lot of fun!
It's a really cool beginners guide you have created.

Tip for newbies: Make sure your meeting point is safe (main stations, public places etc). There are some creepy guys out there you better don't meet in their basements..

Great post, and this applies to anyone at any age or stage.

I've been meaning to get loads of stuff listed but have been putting it off due to working on the business, however you've spurred me on and I've pictured about $600 of stuff to go on eBay tomorrow. I'll get back to the eBay flipping soon just to get some extra cash in and reach the goals a bit quicker.

As Gary Vee would say, if you're absolutely happy and not moaning about money then fine, but if you want something you can't afford or just need to pay the bills then get off your a$$ and go hustle for it. No excuses.

Haha, I've had moments of procrastination on sitting inventory as well.
Seems like such a tedious process in the head sometimes, but in reality it takes so little effort.

Happy eBaying!

Excellent tactic for making some money! I used it myself through much of my younger years for extra cash.

One thing that I did, and that will still work, is to look for the word "lot" on items for sale. My particular target was old nintendo games. I knew the market, and what every game was priced at. It's surprising how fast you memorize that stuff when money is on the line. I would look at sales lots on ebay, see if I could buy them and sell them individually. I would also drive to really crappy pawn shops and buy them for a few bucks each.

As you mentioned, this tactic can work with ANYTHING at all that you know about. People will complain all day long about the fees, and about how hard it is to make money these days using this type of system, and yet they have 0 issue with going to some crap job and making minimum wage for 8 hours a day. Would I rather spend a few hours a day fiddling around on the phone or a computer to make the same wage as I would slaving for 8 hours? You bet I would!

Exactly! And combine this technique WITH a wage job+low expenses (being frugal), and you come out even further ahead! You can literally have all your personal expenses covered, and grow some capital at the same time!

Ive been flipping since I was 13, I buy and sell dirt bikes, jet skis, quads, etc. I know how to repair and fix small motors very well. Ive slowed down a lot on craigslist since I started an actual business about a year and a half ago( I am now 16, about to turn 17), I dont have enough time to do much craigslist stuff with my business and school. The inconsistency of deals in my area really urked me, but flipping is something I recommend for EVERY teen to start with!

EBAY.

No lie.

Love this man. I have done the exact same with camera equipment unintentionally!! Found someone selling a 5D MKIII + the kit 24-105 lens for 2200 (CAD) and turn around and sold the camera for 2200, and the lens for 700 three days later... 700 profit PLUS i got to mess around with one of the best cameras on the market for a few days.

Camera gear is top notch. I probably could've got even more if I sold on eBay!

Great post.

Opportunities open up all the time. People often won't persue things that don't make a lot of money but really require zero work. Today it was simple - A guy wants a snowmobile but for whatever reason can't have it shipped to his address and wants to pick it up instead. He can't find it in stores and asks if anyone is selling the item. I told him I can get take the shipment for a $50 fee, and he agrees, so now I wait for this shipment and this guy to pick it up and basically made $50 for a text.
I also love buying things on a local FB buy/sell/trade page, they are often underpriced and can be sold to the broader market for more. I bought an Iphone 5s + car charger for $80 there and sold later for $120 + $5 car charger on ebay. Plus the extra dollar in the shipping.
Money just poofed from thin air by taps and clicks.

One thing I would add is to not only check what the item is selling for, but also what it sold for in the past. Ebay allows you to take a look at the sales of the last three months, you can even see for which prices it didn't sell. That way you get a really nice idea of how long you are going to sit on your item and how consistent the price is.
