There is something I do that has always seemed completely natural to me. So natural that I assume everyone's brain works this way... Since I haven't (in memory) heard anything about this, I assume it's either so natural, or so instinctual that no one gives it thought.
Yet there are many times I don't do it, and I have no idea why. I could guess laziness, but again I have no idea. It's the lack of certainity that inspires me to type these words.
Alright, I've practiced making a teasing intro, so let's get to the actual topic. I find that whenever you listen to someones message, when the message is in the form of advice, instruction, or worldview one or two things happens.
1: You immediately agree with it, like it's been in your head all along, but you've never given it voice.
1.5: You stare at the speaker and come up with reasons why they just wasted your time.
2: You aren't immediately certain of the message. Perhaps it's very different from what you're used to, maybe you don't trust the speakers credibility, it could be that the message looks plausible, but isn't proven (to you).
When that second thing happens, I tend to obsess over the message for a while. It could be a few seconds, it could be several minutes, all depending on if I find what I'm looking for. That is, I'm hunting for an example that I've experienced where the message is either proven right, wrong, or worthy of further investigation. If you do this and you don't find one, this is what it seems to me that people have a tendency to do.
They give up on the message.
Have you ever been delivered a message, gone for years without 'getting' it, then come back to that same message and went 'Duh! I should have got that the first time!'
Well here is how you do it. You make a note of those messages that don't seem to have any value to you, but do have value to others. If you can't compare it to your own outlooks or past, make a situation where you can test it. Then, do the test.
