I'm interested in a domain that, as far as I can tell, nobody owns. It just takes you to a 404 page when you search for the .com. If that's the case, what's the cheapest way to buy it? Who do you buy it from?

Thanks!

The owner. Do a WHOIS and find the contact email, or send an email to "admin@domain.com". Most nowadays have catchalls to receive all emails pointed at a domain if there is not a specific recipient. If it is a 404 page, someone owns it.

Ah, I see it now. $9.00. Pretty good. I just wasn't used to that format; usually GoDaddy, etc. will turn the domain into an ad to buy the domain.

If it was actually unowned you can just go to a place like namecheap.com and search/buy it.

That's where I get mine from.

Also, do not try and check if a domain is taken using godaddy.com or the domain service. I'm not sure if this is true, but I have heard if they see someone searching for a domain name multiple times, they will buy it to sell it to you at a higher price.

Just do a ping command in Windows command prompt which can tell if the domain resolves to a certain address and a whois command.

Unless you are willing to buy the domain immediately, of course. If that's the case - by all means use the search at the service you plan to buy from.

Thanks for making this thread, I was unsure where the best place to look at domain name prices where. Namecheap.com has been mentioned on multiple occasions. Best of luck w/ current affairs.

I use namecheap. Their price and customer service is really good. Best to buy the domain and hosting from two different providers so you don't keep all your eggs in one basket. ;-)
