Hicks posed a question about word count vs. page estimates (for fiction) on Amazon that led me to start this thread, and I hope all of us who have indie-published on Amazon will contribute. I've read that Amazon uses an algorithm to determine approximate page count if you're only publishing in Kindle format. If we each post our average, maybe we can determine a range so that newbies or those of us who are targeting higher page count will know what to expect. Please post genre, at least high-level if you want to keep your specific genre secret, word count according to your upload file, and approximate pages according to Amazon.

Here's mine. I write erotica and steamy romance. Word count per page varies greatly, but the overall average, i.e., summing all the words in all the books and dividing it by all the pages, is 303. If I look at individual titles, the count ranges from 291 to 398. When I target a word count to a specific page count, I have been using 315, the average I calculated before my last two books, which had more dialog than earlier ones. Now I know that my WIP, which I had targeted at 60k words, needs to have 65k to tip over the magical 200 pages that my prospective publisher wants. No problem, I'll get there.

BTW, my two non-fiction books have a much lower word count per page, 206 and 234 respectively, if anyone's interested. I think that's much less important, since non-fiction tends to have illustrations and such.

Anyone else?

Word count per page varies greatly, but the overall average, i.e., summing all the words in all the books and dividing it by all the pages, is 303.

Using this formula, my books show:

Book 1: 76 pages at 313 words per page.
Book 2: 88 pages at 337 words per page.

I use 330 words per page as the average when estimating book length. So 33k words = 100 pages.

Umm, I write fiction--contemp. romance/women's lit. I use dialog a lot sometimes. I'll just share the page count for each book.

Turn It Loose - 32,403 words - 130 pages (this is based on a print version that clocks in w/ 130 pages with front & back matter, and odd page chapter starts. Amazon will default to the print page count if you have one).

Bad Dates Vol. 1 - 7157 words - 30 pages - (238 words/page - this one has a chapter that is basically a list of men not to date. lol)

Bad Dates Vol. 2 - 33,073 words - 111 pages - (297 words/page)

Interesting thread. Here's mine, all estimates since I don't have print versions yet:

The Fool's Embrace - 25,092 words - 95 pages (Thriller) - 264 w/p
A Dragon Scorned - 12,255 words - 40 pages (Fantasy Adventure) - 306 w/p
A Dragon's Path to Ascension - 14,283 words - 46 pages (Fantasy Adventure) - 311 w/p

Erotica 1 - 16,074 words - 52 pages (Erotica, Contemporary, Paranormal) - 309 w/p
Erotica 2 - 8,022 words - 30 pages (Erotica, Contemporary) - 267 w/p

Cookbook 1 - 7,672 words - 70 pages (Dieting Niche, lots of page breaks for individual recipes) - 110 w/p
Cookbook 2 - 10,796 words - 106 pages (Dieting Niche, same as above) - 102 w/p

Thanks for starting this. Can I add another criteria? Can we add reception. So, did the reviews mention that it was too short? Were there more returns than usual?

All of these are how to books.

Book 1: 8795=56p ......157 words per page.
Book 2: 11132=63p......175 wpp
Book 3: 25147=153p.....164 wpp
Book 4: 8266= 117p This one is deceptive as it was mostly single lines/very few paragraphs....70 wpp

I have had no complaints that the books were too short. Also very low return rate 1-5%

All my books are fiction.

Book 1: 43,000 words.
Book 2: 42,000 words.
Book 3: 60,000 (planned)

All average about 250 - 280 words per page.

Well recipe books, do tend to have many lines with few words, so I know where my bias comes from. I wonder if the how to books maybe are rich in images, and that also affects the words per page count?

I had a few people comment on the fiction being short, but in the sense that they would like more. A few comments on the NF, but very low returns on all my books.

Really curious how some of you are pulling 250-300 words per page in fiction on Amazon. At say, 275 words per page, my books would be:

Book 1: 86 pg
Book 2: 108 pg
Book 3: 120 pg (estimated - not done)

Maybe it's just me, but I think hitting 3 digit page counts would affect buyers positively on a psychological level. It would make them feel like they're getting more value for their money, even if the increase is marginal. For example, 99 looks a lot smaller than 100.

I can't explain it, but when I'm wearing my reader hat and I'm looking through Amazon, something about my willingness to purchase increases when I see a title cross 3 figures in page numbers. I'm infinitely more likely to buy a book that has 110 pages than a book that has 95 pages. No idea why.

At last, I can answer this question...
Genre: Romance
Word Count: 78,900
Amazon Page Count 265
Words Per Page: 298

Are you ready to publish or does your book need to go for proof reading? Either way: good effort :)
Thanks! It's already published. Just in time for Christmas!
