How do you get materials or product made?

I've been wondering how people get the product or materials for a prototype. Lets say you wanted to make something with all natural ingredients, where do you order those ingredients or if you wanted to make a already made product better how do you order it to be made if your product doesn't exist yet outside of the ones already on the market. like if you wanted to make a household product like a coffee maker for example how would you go about making something like that. I'm confused how you go from Idea to product/prototype.
