This year, a new cafe has opened in my high-rise. Another coffee-and-sandwich place on that same block closed within weeks. Absolutely destroyed by the competition. Now I find myself spending about $500/month on takeouts from the new place. And it's not like there were no other restaurants nearby: the location has a 99% walkability index, all kinds of transportations, several banks and several dentists within a 5-minute walk.
What are they doing right?
1) The food is healthy and fresh, as far as I can tell. It is not authentic. It is not delicious. But I need to eat, and I do not want to cook, and delivery services are a pain.
2). The food is diverse enough to work for various moods and occasions.
3). The people working there look like they are happy.
4). The place itself is painted in happy colors.
5). The takeout option is fast, and they do not make mistakes. They also have a lot of seating, with different kinds of tables/chairs depending on mood.
6). The take out containers are clearly made with recycled materials, are pretty small and overall alleviate some of my concerns about sustainability.
7). Somehow they never make a mess with the take out. Maybe they do not serve foods that make a mess. Maybe they have a process.
8). As a resident nearby, they gave me a very generous discount to try their food, for a very long time.
AND IT WAS COMBINABLE WITH OTHER DISCOUNTS. At one point I stacked 3 discounts to get tacos for under a dollar, and the guy was thrilled to help me make it work!
9). They are located on the same block.
While I still enjoy going to a local European cafe, they have unhealthy food and sad staff. So, I come there once a week max, and sometimes just get a coffee.
While I still enjoy a local Vietnamese place, their selection is limited, so I may come twice a month.
While so many local places are half-empty most of the time, this new location is solving all my problems -- WITHOUT THE FOOD EVEN BEING DELICIOUS. - and they are swimming in cash.
On Saturday they actually have a line to get seated, and they are not some famous diner, they have just opened.
It's amazing, how even in the restaurant business there is still so much room to create more value.
