I have a few ideas of social networking sites that I want to create. I know someone that just created one for his niche using a platform like ning or elgg i think. Im curious to know how much would a site like this cost? and how do you get ppl to join

Pligg + a template. It is going to be very hard to have success with sometihng so saturated however, you also need to customize any mainstream SN engines because they all will get spammed like crazy.

nope spammer programs target site framework that are known to typically have PR value and are easy to exploit. a lot of the social network frameworks outthere are included in that list.

definately not worth it. I've had clients ask about doing just this. The rule of thumb is you go where people already are, it works much better and is a lot less work than trying to generate a brand new group of people. The groups are already there, go to them

I've created a couple using Ning.

One was a targeted niche is sitting at about 1,300 users; I don't maintain this site anymore. So none of these user's probally use it. It's really not worth it unless you are selling a product, if you're doing it to think you are going to make money monetizing it and selling ad space. Good luck, you need alot of users. Users come with time.. time.. time.. hard work.. and time..

I'm a fan of kickapps when it comes to building a custom looking piece. I agree that it might very well be a more efficient thing to implement on an existing platform...leverage an already existing audience.
