Hey I wanted to share an experience I recently had. I was reading a Smashing Magazine book about Art Direction for the web. The book introduced me to Trentwalton.com.
This website is clearly beautifully designed. It has attention to detail down to every bone.

One of the pages stuck out to me. It's bold design, and nice use of whitespace. It looked so modern and cutting edge.

Then, I checked the time stamp: 2009! That seems anything but modern. Most websites are updated once every two years. Some of the best brands change their designs every 6 months.

So I decided to take a peek with the way back machine.
2009- My cat will f*©k you up. « Trent Walton
2011- My cat will f*©k you up. | Trent Walton
Today- My cat will f*©k you up. | Trent Walton

I discovered, that the page has been updated slightly, but largely, it has remained the same.
I think this illustrates powerfully, the power of good design. Good design will increase the longevity of content by years.

I don't get it. There isn't any design on that page really.
On the contrary it's got a lot of intentionally designed elements. The page doesn't look much like most other pages.

The pictures are carefully edited to remove the background, and make it seem as if the cat is actually standing on the page. Note the addition of a shadow on the second picture of the cat.

The typography choices guide the eye down the article. And, the page starts with a provocative attention getting headline.

That website is clean and respects the basic rules of design, but it's extremely basic.

As part of my agency's hiring process, tens of portfolios like that every single week. They are boring and don't require true design knowledge nor eye. They have no personality.

In all honesty, I could teach a complete newbie to do something on that level in a matter of hours.

These are some truly well-designed websites:

Talking about the blog post...first of all from 2009 to 2020 it changed a lot. Second, it doesn't look modern or cutting edge. It looks like a blog post that respects visual hierarchy.

And blog posts design is clearly inspired by books which haven't changed in centuries. If you take books published after Gutenberg's printing press (mid-15th century), you will see that the only difference is in the fonts.

So having a blog post that still looks good after ten years in not exactly an accomplishment (by the way the first draft looks pretty bad for today's standards).

If it didn't make sense from a promotional perspective, I would think that you are Trent Walton.
