Hey, I’m back.
From now on, I'll be posting here.
Previous thread: QUESTION - A genuine question regarding lead generation, is word of mouth KING?
Here is what I’m up to.
1 - I’m now officially a (Mechatronics) Engineer! This is my first step toward a very long-term goal of mine, which is eventually pivoting to robotics.
2 - I’ve been learning to code better, and I have seriously learned the fundamentals of JavaScript. (For other developers, I literally had to open the ECMAScript specification sometimes). Hopefully, I can now somewhat think from first principles.
3 - Built and sold a few websites (all from referrals still).
4 - And this is what I mainly want to talk about and share:
I built an MDX-based “blog” for a YouTuber with 150K subs, for free. (This is now my first non-static website).
What does MDX mean? It means you can add interactivity to blogs. I will show you examples later, but for now, think of it more like Duolingo.
For now, here is that blog I built: Slaying the Dragon's Blog
Alright, here is the thing though.
My initial thought process was that if I built something valuable for this YouTuber, he would either pay me or allow me to put my name on it. Either way, I really thought it was going to be a win.
I also knew I had to build it really well, as his niche is teaching programming and front-end development in general. I couldn’t just build slob, he wouldn’t accept it.
So I started. This is when I learned in depth about React, Next.js, and JavaScript. This whole process took me a month or a month and a half.
I then started building the blog in secret. I tried teaming up with some backend developers, but I couldn’t work it out, so I built everything on my own. This also took about a month + a ton of frustration as all of this was new to me — I had information overload 😀. (I was super motivated, I worked 10-12 hours every day, it was unhealthy, and I even fainted once for the first time in my life, but I was super motivated).
Moving on to the reveal day!
I showed him. He, of course, didn’t have any clue that I was building anything. He liked it A LOT. The performance metrics were good, the website was snappy, I bought the domain, and hosted it myself. All I was thinking was: if I provided him with value, I’ll get something in return.
He said put a disclaimer, and put your name on it, and said that he will use it for his videos.
Literally right after setting up the domain and announcing the project to the public, I knew I had diverged from my main goal, and that was getting leads. Yes, he has 150K subscribers, yes he’s got some hit videos, but at the end of the day, most of his followers are absolute beginners. Yeah… I definitely diverged from my main goal.
Here is one more thing: About my blog, it’s very scalable.
1 - I can leverage AI to take any “well-written script” and turn it into markdown format in a matter of seconds.
2 - I can add more interactivity without any effort really, if I can outsource talented entry-level front-end development roles where they can build a (JSX) component, and I will just copy and paste it, making my blog much more interactive.
Here is an example: An Interactive Guide to SVG Paths • Josh W. Comeau
But this dude is in the top 1% of developers.
With these two points in mind, and the fact that I haven’t seen this idea outside of the tech world, I was thinking that by adding authentication, accounts, and users + my blog ability, I could build custom platforms for educators to use outside of tech.
I still don’t know if that idea is good, and I really think nobody “needs” it anyway.
The other thing is, and I’m currently learning how to do it, is building eCommerce websites with my current tech stack, which in my opinion I think is very quick if done right, and that is by integrating Shopify APIs with my own headless platform.
Here is another example: Acme Store
What do you guys think? I’m super motivated!!!!!!!
