OK, I get that their mortgage adjusted up.

Questions:

1. WHY did they have a mortgage when they are holding a check for $50,000?

2. WHY did they have an aggressive adjustable rate mortgage? (certainly didn't have it when they bought the house, so they must have REFI'D).
