For those that don't know, I've been developing a digital advertising platform for the majority of the past year. As I'm gearing up to go 100% live, I'm beginning to consider requests for sales positions more seriously.
My problems with almost every candidate are:
1) They each believe they are the most important person ever. More important than me.
2) They all believe selling is an art form based on talent. I believe my product sells itself.
3) They all want 20%+ commission and equity, and some also want a salary.
4) But without them I'm going to fail, but with them I will be a millionaire. (according to them)
Maybe it's my personal connection to my business, but I consistently feel like I would be doing them a favor by working with them. I just don't feel like anyone I've met appreciates the value I bring to the table with my software, and that I personally am a double edged sword in that I already have a strong strategy for a fine tuned sales machine.
The goal I set for sales may even be met within the first month of opening as I've been networking my way into marketing deals throughout development. When I hear the words "you can't do this without me," I instantly think to myself "I already am."
I DON'T want to do it by myself. My goal was/is to find a partner I believe will bring in more sales than just I myself could. No matter who I bring on, there of course will be more sales than just I alone could do.
So, am I wrong? Am I under-valuing their contribution, or am I right in that most sales associates I talk to overvalue themselves? How can I find or narrow down this search to the right person?
My worry is that I will take on a terrible sales associate, who mis-represents my product, and tarnishes relations with valuable potential clients. Although all of them tell me they're "no risk" to try, I'm risking the reputation of my business.
