I know that openly discussing your idea amongst a bunch of highly motivated entrepreneurs is a bad idea, but considering all the other things I have on my plate I doubt I would do anything about it anyway - basically I just wanted to get my idea off my chest.
So I was browsing craigslist business for sale, and I saw a local company that was selling for $50,000. It claimed that it offered an internet-cafe with 12 terminals, which made around $38,000/yr profit, located in a popular mall (I have no clue how accurate those numbers actually are)
Reading the ad got me thinking - I have a business that sells emergency preparedness eqipment. I have a lot of great ideas about improvements I'd like to make, banner ads I'd like to design, etc. Of course, I don't want to pay someone else to do it right now (since I have no money), and I certainly don't want to pay for expensive software like photoshop, illustrator, etc, however I'd love to play around with it, maybe take an hour tutorial with an instructor, then decide if it's right for me to buy myself and teach myself or outsource the work.
I wonder if an internet-cafe with expensive, professional-level software programs would be a decent business idea - basically a place for people to come, pay a small fee to play around with photoshop, illustrator, or even semi-serious games like flight simulator x, and/or use the internet...maybe even take a class on photoshop that is offered at the cafe on occasion. You could even franchise the idea to other malls and locations (Digital Sandbox has a nice ring to it
). I have no idea if the software licenses even allow for this.
