Steps to reproduce:

Search the forum for the following text: "speed reading". Searching for other text does not trigger the bug and searches return results normally.

Symptoms/actual behaviour:

A blank page with nothing but the following text:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 79 bytes) in /home/discussf/public_html/community/library/Zend/Db/Statement/Mysqli.phpon line 304

Expected behaviour:

A list of forum posts in which speed reading is mentioned

Edit: Clarification about specific search term to trigger the bug and not all searches.

In any event, the forum search's function isn't the best which is why I recommend the Google Search box that is on the forum's page.

Thanks, MJ. Didn't notice the Google search box before but I tried the same search there just now and it gave me relevant results.

Didn't want to start a new thread to report this bug with Advertisements. I have been seeing this since about January but had been ignoring it up until now.

Anyone else getting the same error?

I'm on Firefox and don't get the error.

Also tried Safari and and Chrome, still no error.

This tells me it is local to your system.

I'm getting this error on Firefox (logged in), Safari and Chrome on macOS:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 32 bytes) in /home/discussf/public_html/community/library/Zend/Db/Statement/Mysqli.php on line 294

Same errors on both Firefox and Chrome on Linux (Ubuntu). Noticed the same errors on CentOS 7 when I first reported this.

I don't have access to Windows either at home or at work.

This is interesting because the other day, I remember reading the thread about speed reading, and subsequently took a speed reading test off-site. I then couldn’t get back on the forum for most of the day, it was in a constant state of loading and timing out like the servers were down.

This is related to an Apache/Nginx + PHP setting. It could be a simple fix, like turning up memory_limit in a config file, or it could be that you've reached a limitation based on 32 bit binaries but require more than 4GB to run at peak times, or you may simply not have enough physical memory to execute some peak-time queries. You'd have to look at the server configuration and know something about the machine(s) this forum runs on.

If a query requires more memory than Apache/Nginx + PHP lets it have, it will return an error. Basically it's saying "I can't store the answer to your question long enough to dump it on a page for you."

Or, "what did I go into the kitchen for again?"

Most likely, if it keeps happening, it will be at peak times when someone does a query that takes a lot of memory... typically a search or export.
