Ok so due to me being impacted by shiny object syndrome I have committed myself to form a physics tutorial service. As a quantum physics major , this seems as a great way to add value to society.

Value + commitment = growth

Due to the difficulty of scaling i will create a social media empire uploading videos to explain concept to do with Physics WACE courses(high school). From that I will get clients and I can eventually upgrade my fb page. Finally I can design a tutorial app similar to Uber.

Lets goooo 6 months ! If you see me change help me out and remind me!

Jeez I feel almost addicted to this project , I haven't changed plans and am still going strong. My partner has been annoying silent so i reckon I will focus on my work and ignore him , ditch him.

Here are some pictures of my website , I still have a long way to go but I feel addicted to it. Some days I spend IMG20190306193148_1.jpg 4-6 hours straight coding

How are you validating the idea?
Similar websites exist with a significant amount of users. I am simply trying to add a skew factor to it, mainly a video before agreeing to tuition services.

An example would be selling shoes , the fact that numerous people own shoe stores are a validation in itself.

This sounds great!

Have you read the shiny object syndrome thread...It says to work inside the goals you have. To make a new cover page or something!

I've been having the exact same problem!

Looking forward to the progress

How would this be different than, say, Khan Academy or other existing tutorial-type sites?

And how could you slap together an MVP, maybe by using existing tools? Maybe by creating a private Youtube channel for paying students, or a membership area on a Wordpress website. Again, the idea is: what's the fastest path to validate & get paying customers?

I get what you mean, without validation I can't be sure that this will work.

That said I am a tutor , so to an extent i have used similar directory websites. It is much more successful and safer.

I also think I haven't explained the concept properly. its not online tutorials jts a marketplace where tutors and students meet.

Tutors upload introduction videos with a view of their work etc. If students like it they call the tutors and are hired.

I can upload a bare bones one in a few weeks too a month.so I guess this init self is a validation

EDIT
I must also add that I want to focus on influence first , monetization comes with more users.

Thanks for the kind words

I don't think I have read that thread I will go search for it ,I assume it's gold.

The problem with shiny object syndrome is we are too focused on money. Forget about money, as long as you have CENTS covered you should be good.

Another thing is finding the overlap between passion and CENTS.

Well that's my 2 cents anyway

Actually, validation in the sense that you can get people to pay you for the service--tutors and/or students who need tutors and/or high-schools who want to boost their students' performance.

You might also consider your value skew (how much more valuable is your thing vs. competitors' things) and barriers to entry (could competitors easily add the video feature you're considering?).

Yes they could implement my skews but the momentum of this skew coupled with better UI, better service , future upgrades , freemium type and branding should help me even more.

Furthermore I am focusing on my city first ,that way I can deal with any problems and extra skew factors people want.

The online database I am making sells information mainly the information of good tutors.

This doesn't become valuable until I acquire thousands of users. Eventually payment could be boosts in scaling , adding words like "validated", checking degrees , adding experience buttons etc

Personally I saw a need through my surroundings , that's enough validation for me.

Websites are an endless endeavour. People underestimate how long it takes to make a good one, and once you start you realize how long an pendantic improving it can be. Just keep at it! Small changes that take forever are worth it. Especially when you develop re-usuable components and to create and use your own space.

Ok we should release in 10 days, I have been really busy with uni so have been spending a few hours after uni coding. A good childhood friend is helping me polish off the MVP.

From there we can begin the marketing portion , I should add that I haven't completely got rid of shiny object syndrome. I have been selling laptops on the side to survive and making a database for my family shop.Built a solar car and Arduino projects for fun.

However this is the most focused I have been. so imma finish this off!

Thinking we know what the market wants, without testing our assumption, is dangerous--even seasoned entrepreneurs are often wrong.

I'd urge you to reconsider; the time you invest in talking to potential customers is invaluable. If you find that no one is interested, that's actually a great thing, because you'll have saved yourself time & money building something no one wants. And if there is interest, the qualitative info you'll get from customers is gold for building what they'll pay for.

He's building an MVP website and going to run some test ads to it to see what sticks. Isn't that how you would define "testing the market"?

Maybe I missed that piece about running ads to the MVP.

That's one way to validate. Actually talking with potential customers will give you the kind of qualitative data that can shine a light on some of the things that online metrics can't tell you--things like why or why don't users like certain things, what their specific motivations & desires are, etc. Those qualitative aspects can be gold nuggets to lead you to home in on your target market.

The market has already been verified , I am not building something new I am simply adding better search techniques , validation methods etc.

Also I have talked to tutors in my uni and this a solution to a common problem they have ( over saturation and lack of verificati).

When I combine this with marketing to uni students(initial niche) I can begin implementing other ideas.

If I am wrong I'll find out soon enough but I'm following my gut intuition.

Cool! Just wanted to check - knowing a subject and teaching it are two very different things!
What do you mean about "knowing a subject"?

Doesn't teaching a subject imply knowing it, could you elaborate?

I was a bit vague.

There is a difference between lecturing a student on a subject, and ensuring:
  • they understand the subject
  • are not confused on the subject
  • they can apply what they learned
  • they understand how what they learned fits in with the other areas they've learned
For example, I teach people to play guitar. I'm moving into teaching people online, after having only taught in person for several years. I could have taught online years ago, but I would have just been "lecturing" people on the various topics and exercises.
After having taught people in person, I now understand the processes I have to guide them through, in order to understand and apply what I teach; and I can anticipate most of the problems they will have on the way. I think that is something that can only be learned teaching people in person.

Maybe you have misunderstood the website I am creating, its a conduit for tutors to advertise themselves on. I am not personally tutoring on it(although I would probably place my profile on it) rather others will enter their details on the website(initially).

aah right, I misunderstood your intentions.

This market is already heavily saturated - what will make your website special and how will you monetise it?

What you need to monetise, control, is what makes the experience bad (at least from my perspective of being a tutor).

Alright !

Where have i been?

Well!

Uni has gobbled up most of my time and exams took over in the last month. I basically focused on a side hustle (computer selling) , uni and my dads shop.

What happened to my previous website?

My co-partner basically did 10% of what he promised ( which would still be me doing 75% of the work! ) that is the last time i work with him!

So i scrapped the website and focus on finishing my university project. This project was to create a ranking based website. I then promised myself i would build the website i wanted.

I worked with a close friend for this uni project and basically built the website from scratch(got 93% so we did really well!). My next goal was to simply implement this website i built last month and use it for my project.

.............BUT!!

After talking to professors and others i was basically laughed at. The server type i was planning to use would lead to static webpages(flask if anyone is interested). So after my exams i worked with my close friend to build the website using a new framework (django for the code savvy).

Finally in literally a few weeks (the knowledge i gained from the previous failures helped me speed run it !!) we have finished the main code of the website and are now gathering a few friends to beta test it.We are also going to get advice from my friends connections.

Here are a few pictures of our contraption :

MainPic.PNGCreate Ad.PNGHorseMain.PNG
Image.PNG

So i can get this up and running in less than 2 weeks. From there i am going to begin the marketing part!

Fun times!
