My next venture: Abolishing compulsory education and making a profit

The headline says it all. If you are truly "educated" then you know what I say should be done. There is no way others should be in charge of determining what others should learn. That is the sole responsibility of parents or guardians. Compulsory education has destroyed the ability to attain happiness. It says "You better do this or you will fail Then you won't have a house and car and a spouse. People will laugh at you." But what they won't teach, because they can't, is how to earn money or if that's not your interest how to be happy. Those are taboo subjects in school. It's dirty and happiness is "flaky". But when everyone comes back for the high school reunion how much money people have is mostly all anyone wants to really show. Even "cool" "peace and love" Janis Joplin wanted to rub her fame and fortune in her classmates faces at her high school reunion (at least because they treated her very bad in school). Look it up if you don't believe me.

How will I profit? I do not know exactly at this point but possibly I can sell education systems that people will pay for. Not all people mind you. Just the people who believe in my style of education. This is what I believe.

Public education is the worst. It is not only bad value it does major damage. How do I know? I had public education. I have observed myself and all my classmates and what happened to everyone after we "graduated". NO ONE had the skills to deal with the simplest things to master. Things like health, finance and law (simply people interacting with each other). To this day only a few can "handle themselves" in life. I have learned and have done ok. But there's a lot more I l need to learn and practice.

I wrote a long post and deleted all of it.

For a person that doesn’t like institutions you surely are keen on starting a new one!

Good luck with your ventures

I just don't like things that don't work and/or do damage and/or can be improved. And I'm not starting a new institution. I'll be providing a valuable service that people will WANT to pay for - unlike now where they are forced (public school). If people will pay then I did it right. Same for everyone - except public schools. Public anything. Get a clue.

Well yes, people are forced into school. How are you going to change that?
I’m just trying to understand :)

Is it educational systems or courses?

The only way I see you being able to redesign the education system is by starting your own school and creating a curriculum that proves what you are saying, which I agree with for the record.

At that point you may be able to sell your proven curriculum, after years and years of proven results. Or just start more schools.

I am in full support of a new education system, just know it won't be as easy as designing an education system that is just a theory and expecting people to pay for it.

In the US it's each state that forces education. A revolutionary movement can be created where the system is changed very quickly in one state - then the other states can easily and quickly follow. Then other countries. This revolution can be accomplished by "exposing value". People will respond to the better deal, where the outcome works. Value deals can be created.

My idea of education is based simply on how a person exists and what they are becoming, with happiness being the goal. In order for a person to "handle themselves" in this world and attain happiness they do in fact need to know, learn and practice three things:

1. Health - how it pertains to the individual and society. Without good health you can't enjoy life to the fullest or at all, depending.
2. Finance - how it pertains to the individual and society. Everyone needs some money. At least they need to be financially stable for life regardless of how much they earn or have.
3. Law - simply the interaction of people - how not to violate the rights of anyone and what to do if you think you are being violated. It may only happen once or twice in a lifetime but you definitely need to know when

I would have medical doctors, successful businesspeople and attorneys teach these subjects. The "students" would be left to their own to study but be tested at regular intervals. In my educational system there can be no cheating - you either succeed or unfortunately face the consequences. These include possible bad health, bad finances and legal issues. But when you master those subjects "the world is your oyster" and happiness is always in sight. People WILL GLADLY PAY and pay a premium for this kind of education! I also want everyone, no matter the ability to pay, to have access to this quality education. That can done, too.

I will also add, if you are at all skeptical at what I say the proof can be demonstrated by something I became aware in recent years: In Europe they have for-profit language schools that guarantee a student will be fluent in like 4 months or so. This is a money back guarantee. This course is intensive, like hours of instruction per day or night.

In my public school most students get 2-4 years of language. There is no guarantee that students will learn to speak the language. Guess what? Only a small percentage, like less than 1%, actually become fluent. After 2 to 4 years! It's not so surprising however.

Why the difference? Take a guess? It's incentive! Without incentive to earn a living a public school teacher has absolutely no incentive to guarantee that students will be fluent. I'm not saying all public school teachers are bad or anything. Most are not. It's just that the system provides no incentive to provide results like the private sector.

People will pay where they are assured results. Public schools do not assure results.

This is what I understand

You need a good network of people.
You also need massive capital.

All of this upfront.

Basically you want to make 3 courses about health, finance and law and teach the people that want those on a 1to1 basis + the course material.

That’s what people are already doing and you’re a bit biased.

If I got it wrong again , then you need all of the above x 10

Also, related to your proof that “moneyback guarantee” works, every guru and his mom has a big text under their “buy now” button that says “ xx Days Moneyback guarantee.”

I’m not trying to be mean at all. To me it just sounds like an over complicated sales page for yet another course.

Over here, over there.
The only way to achieve this type of thing is to outcompete the established "compulsory education" and make it obsolete, so that public demand overpowers the lawmakers and the pressure is strong enough to uncompulsify education.

This is no small task and it has taken many years to make any headway in this direction and there is A TON of resistance from the establishment, as is to be expected. You're not going to threaten their mass brainwashing program without facing serious retaliation.

I suggest you look into charter schools in the US and how they've been treated (and the great results they've been getting in spite of that), as well as the homeschooling movement (Ron Paul's Homeschool Curriculum is a nice starting point there) and all manner of initiatives looking to compete with public schooling.

And I'd say this is a valiant pursuit and I encourage you in it. There are plenty of ways to make it profitable, since education is one of if not the top value-enabler in human history, so if you can provide education in a better way than the compulsory version you're attempting to displace, you'll surely make a pretty penny.

Good luck with the haters using other people's money to cut your wings.

Teaching is a bit like law. Everyone thinks they know more about it than the people who do it for a living.

I do agree, as would most teachers, that the UK state model is very much geared towards churning out good little employees. A generation or so ago we were talking about 'factory fodder' (until all our manufacturing got sold off.) It certainly isn;'t perfect, and if your kid is at either end of the spectrum - stunningly clever, or extreme barriers to learning - then you are a little stuck. The private (fee paying) system isn't much better.

I personally HATE the idea of business people coming in and having input into the curriculum. At a very basic level, the timings don't work. If you bring someone in today they will tell you what they want TODAY. The kid in question probably won't be leaving school for another few years. Similarly, there's this myth that you can just engage classes of young people by telling them lots of 'relevant' stuff which they can then apply and become amazing. It doesn't work that way, trust me.

For me anyway, I think the model we have works for most kids - most, not all. A good spread of arts and sciences that teaches them how to learn. If I have a criticism it's that the current focus is way too much on passing exams so we end up 'teaching to test'. Basically spoonfeeding them the answers and getting them to memorise them. Then we complain they don't know how to find out info for themselves.

Also, it's worth saying that here in the UK schools do a pretty good job of picking up the pieces from chaotic home lives, socialising kids, and supporting them in all sorts of other ways. It's not perfect, but on the whole it works.

It's an interesting time to be looking at education though. I think we are at the start of big changes generally.

I am all for the transformation of the educational systems. I have experienced both ends of the stick of the conventional and self-education. I didn't know about this until I hit this forum. I can say I learned more on my own.

Home Schooling is what many people have been learning in 2020. As I have been referring to since this person here has been helping people online. She might be able to give you some ideas if you contacted her.

Thank you to everyone who replied. I didn't expect at all the positive responses.

In 1965 in the US like 1 million children were homeschooled. By 1970 it was like 5 million! What happened in just 5 years? There was, as you know, a major shift in mindset (or should I say consciousness?). They got it. But it wasn't enough. They didn't have much power. Then we had people like entrepreneur Steve Jobs. What did he say? That you, literally you, can change the world. It sounds nuts but it's really true. Today people know more and can see infinitely more and in real time like never before. in history. The time is always right now for beneficial social change. I don't think it has to be major undertaking for social change; it just needs to be approached in a way that exposes value.
