Alcohol has throughout history harmed and ruined countless lives in many different ways. It's true. I know. People who know the world know. But what if I create a certification for people who agree to never drink alcohol. Could that certification list and information be sold to those who want to use the information to ensure the people they would like to have a relationship with are of the character types they want?

The obvious example is an employer but there could be many reasons people want to know and would gladly pay for it. It sounds like there might be privacy issues but in this case it's actually inherently good - no one is going to think less of anyone because they don't drink alcohol.

What do you think? Good idea? Or do you think I'm not sober? (I am and haven't touch drink in many years; never will)

Create a landing page, run a few hundred dollars worth of Instagram and Google ads to the landing page, see what your CPA for a form fill is and then crunch the numbers based off of what you think you could sell that data for.

The above is a simplified version of evidence based testing. No one knows if this is a good idea or not. Personally I think it’s weird as shit, but the market could prove me wrong.

Anything other than something like the above is just a guess, no matter what you’re told.

Thanks. It is worth trying and testing.

As far as weird I definitely see your point but what the value is is one of character assessment, which is very important to many people and organizations. I have found a correlation between those who do not drink and better character. Better character means better everything. It's not scientific but real world proven. It's also very obvious when you really think about it.

I see a few immediate problems with this idea.
  1. There’s no real way to verify the list, so anyone could just add their name to reap the benefits.
  2. What would stop someone else from making another similar list?
  3. It assumes that teetotalers are better people or higher character when there’s much more that goes into that (e.g. compare an honest, family-man who has a craft beer every few days to a wifebeater druggie who doesn’t drink…)
  4. I would never pay for such a list. I’d form an impression based on resume, social media profiles, interview, etc

Those are very good points but it's not just a list. It can be an accurate predictor of "the right people" AND can can be used to shape society into one where there is more happiness. So markets could be governments, foundations, religious organizations, etc. whose mission is to create a better world.

As far as barriers to entry. It may be easy to do but easy does not mean other will do it. Look at craigslist, for example. I would have some proprietary methods so it would not be that easy.

People could in fact lie about their status but there are ways of determining just how prevalent that is and ways to prevent it and weed out those that do. Also, people who do lie might find that it comes back against them at some point.

Lastly you have the idea that people who drink alcohol can be "better" people than those who don't. That may be true for some people but overall it is definitely not true. That's why I am exploring this idea.

Sounds like you have already made up your mind that you have a great idea on your hands. In that case, good luck on the venture. I hope you take action and report back here with your findings.

Personally, I don’t see the correlation between people that don’t drink and a higher level of moral character. It’s great that you have chosen not to consume alcohol. It’s something I have weighed the pros and cons of many times for myself, but your philosophy and reasoning comes across as extremely judgemental and self righteous.

When I first read this I was reminded of my Irish parents' Pioneers Pledge certificates. In other words, it's not a bad idea - it's just very much been done before.

I'm not judging anyone who drinks. I'm trying to expose the truth and help prevent all the damage that drinking leads to. It's not automatically a better level of "moral" character for everyone who doesn't drink - it's the correlation between abstaining and the elimination of all the negatives that go along with it. For example, did you know that over 50% of all domestic violence is due to alcohol use? So you can safely determine that if you have a pool of abstainers that they are a lot less likely to engage in violence. I am not at all saying that most people that who drink are violent; I'm saying if you don't drink you probably are not one who is.

Think about traffic accidents. Think about physical health. Think about mental health. Mental health? You probably didn't because most people have no idea that over time alcohol destroys the brain. I know I've seen it. I've seen people go from high levels of success to being unable to remember where they are, this is when they were sober. Very sad but very preventable.

Yes there are and have been teetotalers organizations all over the world. The oldest and largest is I believe in Ireland is religious based (the one you referenced). But what I propose will be secular (non-religious), not involve a pledge and will not have dues or take donations. It will sell the data to prevent the damage alcohol does in the world. Organizations, governments and people will pay for that, I believe. I'm just looking for feedback. Thanks.

There's a bunch of us out there who can't drink for health reasons. It's not a moral choice. I'm not better than those who drink. It's very simple. I don't drink because it makes me sick as a dog. Mostly, I want to live a little bit longer.

You're not better than those who drink but you are "better off" than them! For example, you will never be a drunk driver. You will never have an alcohol related accident that you caused. You will never become addicted to alcohol (and all the negatives that come with it). You will never have negative health as a result of alcohol. You will never make a fool of yourself due to alcohol. There's a lot more of why you are much better off than those who drink. There's a lot of employers who would favor you just because of that. There's a lot of people who would favor your friendship over those who drink. Statistically you will live long but that's not the best part. The best part is your life will be all the better for not drinking.

For some inspiration, there's a guy selling land on the moon, mars, and other solid planets + orbiters.
If he can get away with that, anything's possible.

I also don't do drugs -- either from the doctor or from the streets. I know that IF I take anything, I'll have terrible side effects. It's like drinking. It's easy for me and it's a no-brainer. I don't even miss any of it.
