As full-time resident of Georgia, I can only speak of this country.

#7 in the world by the index of ease of business (Worldbank data)
#4 in the world by the index of safety (Numbeo.com)
#12 in the world by the index of economic freedom (Heritage.org)

Do you like mountains? - check!
Do you like sea? - check!
Do you like rainforests? - check!
Do you like deserts/safari? - check!
Do you like nightlife/clubs/shitty dive bars? - check
Do you like wine? - double check!

Price of living is much cheaper than Europe (city public transportation $0.25, meal in restaurant $5-10, city center 100sq/m apartment $400).

Maybe I'm biased as a local, but having traveled in europe, can't think of any that's better to live.

I definitely intend to visit some of these lesser known countries in Europe that a lot of you have mentioned.

What's the deal with wild dogs in Georgia? I've heard a few people say they were chased by packs of street dogs in the capital or in parks etc
Bro, I’m sure that’s Atlanta not Georgia.

There is plenty of opportunity in the UK, but culturally it's not somewhere I want my kids to grow up, the woke laws / politics suck.

Any suggestions of thriving and common sense practicing cultures and locations would be appreciated!
Cyprus should do it

How is this "woke" movement affecting your everyday lives negatively? Like how bad can it be? Can you give examples?
Can't you just turn off the TV, stop reading news on the internet and live peacefully, or is it so bad that you are affected in real life?

I'm just curious, where I live in Europe the woke movement hasn't spread much and its importance isn't looking to become significant any time soon

Rhode Island for now.
Been traveling full time since early 2020.

Flying back to the US for the first time in 8 months tomorrow. Not looking forward to it.

I ask myself actually, why do I need to go back?
The awful woke culture is hard to ignore. I don't have any social media, I don't read any news - yet I STILL get it sprinkled in my life.

I want to live with independent people - who believe in the value of hard work, personal responsibility and respect.
I want to be around people who respect everyone - not just people with certain skin tones and sexual whatever.

We're all people, and I don't get what happened to judging people by who they are - not what they look like.

--
Anyway, I think about this question a lot. I just don't need to be in the US anymore.

We spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe last year. That's solid.
Cyprus is on the list.
Lived in Portugal for 3 months, not bad.
Living in Mexico City, and honestly, right now, that's our favorite.

Heard Georgia is cool, will try to get there next year.

But really, as far fetched as it sounds, I want the succession / free state setup.
I just don't want some government to penalize me because I create jobs, opportunities and work hard.
And I resist any 22 year old telling me I should do this or that - I want to be left the F alone.

Sad to see the US fall apart, but, I'm not going to cry - going to get on with life and be happy elsewhere.

(sorry, rambling rant, but, this hits home to me in so many ways)

This is a great thread!

If SNP get in this election then I'm going to have to leave Scotland. I lived in Spain for a few years but when the SHTF with covid I didn't want to be in a foreign country where I didn't speak the language.

I'd probably hold off on moving until things settle post pandemic. Still not convinced we've seen the last of how bad this may get...

Everybody here is benefiting from it at the moment so theres a blind eye turned to it. Lots of high paid tech jobs with multinationals & the government gets a small % of the multinationals profits which do add up.

I’m talking more about society, they are policing speech, changing and adding in random laws. Pretty much like every western english speaking country at the moment. A lot of our influences/ culture come from the English speaking USA & UK now.

Texas, I think they give out the death penalty for liberals down there, and when you are born, legend has it the doctor hands you an AR-15.

Will be interesting to see with alot of Americans moving to Texas the amount of time before it turns into the new California. Hey look! A bunch of homeless people camping outside someones business! Omg is that poo on the sidewalk!?

Okay I see what you're talking about, but really how bad can it be?

I have the impression that the woke movement lives only on Twitter and in the news, but in real life it is not being given much weight

Realistically is this Scottish bill going to impact your life at all?

In my opinion you can avoid the woke culture by shutting off the internet and cutting bridges with certain people...

Haha "How bad can it be?" famous last words...

This rhetoric and far-leftist ideology is strongest amongst our younger voters and they will be in charge not too long from now. It's only going to get worse if it isn't nipped in the bud now. You can't cut bridges with the population at large. We exist together in our communities.

And yes, it's already impacting my life if my freedom of speech is curtailed through fear of reprisal. It isn't only for Twitter users.

A word of warning. Just because a country will generally oppose what you would refer to as the 'woke-crowd' does not mean that they actually have any principled approach to freedom of speech or other liberal values. In fact often quite the opposite. Eastern European countries are a prime example of this.

México baby! Biased because I live here now.
Legal is a suggestion, sure there's corruption and crime, but I like a little spice in my life. It keeps you on your toes.
The upside is great. I haven't really found anything that's more expensive here than in Canada, much better climate (I love the warmth and sun, but there's a wide range of climates here if you're not all for it), and the people here really value their freedom. I can walk into a pharmacy and buy medicine without a prescription, and my favourite part is that they're not completely covid crazy with restrictions (at least in the state I'm in). Easy visa as well. Worth looking into.

Great topic indeed, if you work from home then the choice must not be that hard, but if you have to get a job it gets a little bit harder.

I've been preparing my "Portuguexit" for some years now, and hopefully the pandemic disappears fast because I want to leave my country by the end of the year.

I am going to Germany, the idea of a cheap Bulgaria or Ukraine is nice, but it isn't that appealing when you need to get a job in my opinion.

My barber told me the other day that Poland is awesome though, and even me being quite conservative the truth is that housing and a strong economy is a priority for me.

Let's see how it goes.

Olá Bruno,

I just moved to Portugal to study. I've noticed there are lots of Portuguese who have left for other parts of Europe. Is this happening more lately?

In your opinion, how would you compare the UK and Portugal? I feel both these countries have a high cost of housing/living compared to average wages.

Eastern Europe does seem quite interesting. Especially for conservatives :)

My buddy bought a house with about an acre out in the country for 20k USD. Has internet through a tower installed on the roof. It's a nice place, but I'd rather be close to the action in the city; he's in the middle of nowhere in coffee growing country.

I'm renting a 3 bedroom house in a gated community with a gym, nice big pool, and 24 hour security for 25,000 pesos/month. About a 7 minute drive to the beach. In Canada that would get me an OK 1 bedroom apartment, maybe 2.

So overall, you get a lot more value for your money than you do in the Western world. Can be tricky if you're looking to purchase land as a foreigner close to the ocean, much easier to get your name on the deed about 30-50 miles from the coast.

Boas!

Portugal is a great country to live but bad to work. It has always been this way, it's the lack of industrial culture that always made our economy weak, throw in some socialist sauce and I don't see our paradigm changing anytime soon — the popularity of leftist parties is a natural consequence from 50 years of a ultra conservative fascist regime that promoted a "simple catholic farming life".

The ones that wish better always end up leaving, it started big in the 60s and today it still keeps going strong, we are the country with the highest emigration rate as a proportion of population in the EU, +20% of the portuguese people live in another country and in the last 10 years about 100k people leave the country every year, alot come back but you can see how serious we're regarding discovery and colonization.

Now, the one about the UK and Portugal is easy, it has been that the british want to live here and the portuguese want to work there, but those times are changing, a big portion of the portuguese moved to the UK every year, but with the brexit things will change, and nowdays the british (our traditional clients) aren't our prime tourists anymore, it's obvious that they have lost alot of purchasing power and don't spend as they used to, I think they are moving somewhere else abroad where it's cheaper, the french are here now taking over everything like they're runing from something.

And to finish, regarding wages and housing costs it seems that we can't look at it individually, the economies are globalized and the prices want to uniformize, you can see how the real estate is still expensive even in 3rd world countries, investors that can't buy real estate in their countries go abroad, tight construction regulations and lack of housing policies worldwide leads to housing becoming expensive everywhere, the prices get uniformized at high levels and only the countries with better wages will manage to keep a good standard of living on minimum/average wages, this is why I'm choosing Germany as they have a great balance between wages and cost of living, they can do it like no one else: they are the engine of europe, trust me, as a conservative I wish I could go to Latin America or Eastern Europe instead of the West, but I just can't trust them.
