Redbull is full of sugar that cannot be avoided. Coffee you can add sugar or not. I can't drink coffee without sugar and cream. I do drink green tea instead if I want something hot without sugar.

If you are used to drinking a certain amount (red bull, coffee), you will have to slowly reduce your consumption so you don't suffer "cold-turkey" affects before making a switch. Most folks get massive headaches otherwise.

Power naps are good to way to recharge - I like to use a zero gravity chair for those. A 30-40 minute break like that can provide you 6-8 more hours of energy - good productive energy. I do this if I have to work a night events. They are usually scheduled for go for 4-5 hours but usually its 7-8 hrs including pre and post event tasks.

My advice is to stay away from either. Your adrenaline glands which produce your natural pick me up become less efficient. I remember many years ago I got stuck in a rut constantly feeling tired and the only way I could operate was energy drinks.

Green tea is a good suggestion. Also a morning workout usually is pretty good for making you full of beans throughout the day. A good thing to do is keep a nutritional diary along with your energy levels. I often found around 4pm my energy levels would tail off without a morning workout.

There is no 1 size fits all as many people will have you believe.
There are natural ways of improving your energy levels

The best way IMO of manipulating your ability to stay alert is blood sugars. I'm definitely NOT an advocate of sweeteners as I believe they have a worse effect than sugars, however if you can eat natural foods this will also help. Anytime you eat anything such as fruit (whilst healthy) mix it with natural yoghurt. The fats in the yoghurt stop the sugars spiking your blood system as they would on their own.

Good luck

Physical exercise is the GOAT when it comes to restoring wakefulness and mental clarity. Try these on for size before OD'ing on caffeine:

Tip #1: Buy a jump rope and start skippin' when you start to mellow down to get your blood moving. (Or run, swim or cycle for a while, same effect.)

Tip #2: Pomodoros + Pushups (Do 40-50% of your pushup max after each work period to stay fresh.)

Tip #3:
Foam Roll + Stretch (Unpacks your tight muscles and promotes blood flow to the brain.)

Let's see.

Coffee:
  • Basically just beans and water.
  • Rich in antioxidants.
  • Reduces risk of heart disease.
  • Improves mood and concentration.
  • Smells delicious.
  • Very difficult to overdose on, you'd have to drink like 30 cups in one hour.
  • Overall a very benign upper.
Energy Drinks:
  • Basically an evil mad scientist experiment in a sugary sludge.
  • Causes brain damage, blood vessel damage, and a bunch of other stuff.
  • Increases risk of heart disease.
  • Diabetes in a can.
  • Easy to overdose on. Two can do it.
  • Smells like chemical diarrhea.
  • Basically crack made into a soda pop.

Neither. If it's that hard to stay alert, you may be in the midst of a problem. It's often that you're just not laying in bed at night for 8+ hours with no light and no ipads. Trust that if you get enough sleep you'll be able to do more work in less time, and won't have to "burn the candle at both ends." If you already sleep 8+ hours per night, it's worth checking to see if congestion, sleep apnea, or something else is interfering with your sleep. There are sleep specialists who actually look for the problem rather than medicating you (the latter which doesn't work because sleeping pills produce unconsciousness rather than true sleep).

Used to drink up to 3 liters of energy drinks a day.

Now I don't see any reasons for drinking them. Regular exercise, better sleep, and better nutrition provide so much stamina boost that it beats energy drinks completely.

You don't wake up like a zombie, don't feel tired after caffeine effect has worn out, the head doesn't hurt, the heart doesn't want to jump out of your chest, you're more energetic and once hard tasks now seem like a piece of cake to do. The best thing is that highly productive state is just by default, not after drinking half a can of some Red Bull, Monster or Burn.
Subjectively caffeine does slightly help with concentration, but the improved overall productivity is well worth it. Quite possible this focus comes with a slight compromise on clarity.

Much much less sugar, more green stuff, and proteins, lots of walking and some gym exercises, adjusting your day closer to sunshine hours, even if you're a hardcore owl.

I don't really understand why, but sleeping roughly from 11-12 PM to 6-7 AM does have an effect on mood and productivity compared to sleeping from 1-2 AM to 9 AM. My second "productivity boost hours" just shifted from 11 PM - 2 AM to 7-11 PM.

Drinking tea, especially green is great advice too. It has lots of benefits as mentioned above.

P. S. I don't like the taste of the coffee.

I’ve also noticed this.

Here’s a video that explains it nicely. It’s apparently due to something called ‘sleep pressure’.

View: https://youtu.be/q9q3hfsPYpM

I’ve also heard Shawn Stevenson talk about this — he calls it the ‘money time’ period. According to him, those hours from 10AM-2AM are the most rejuvenative hours of sleep you could get.

I had a neighbor once that actually had to get a blood transfusion after fainting...she was going on coffee runs at midnight!

After did she quit?

Nope.

Sometimes vanity is a life saver. Once I see my face looking dehydrated or zombie face I stop. :)

And you know that other type of sipping combined.

lol this thread got funny. Moderation people. MODERATION.

goes and gets his 7th cup of coffee

More seriously, caffeine can make for a nice boost and help with concentration. If you're finding yourself constantly tired however, there's a bigger problem at play.

And nothing beats an EC stack either when it comes to energy :hilarious:

You could switch to green tea, get some good loose leaf, you'll need to steep it at a lower temp than you do coffee or black tea or you ruin the flavor (and health benefits)

you'll need more green tea (it has less caffeine) but iirc the polyphenols fro mgreen tea are more beneficial for health than the theaflavins in black tea

theaflavins (black tea goodies)

catechins (green tea goodies, different ones in all sorts of other food like fruits and things but green tea specific ones are pretty well studied by themselves)
Green tea is a great alternative. Or even better, Matcha; which is green tea but stronger.

Flavonoids / Polyphenols seem to bind to an enzyme called COMT which is responsible for the degradation of dopamine, especially in the prefrontal cortex. By binding to those enzymes it increases synaptic dopamine.

Other options include Rhodiola (MAO/COMT inhibitor) or Mucuna pruriens (contains Levodopa)

As I've read somewhere, matcha was the beverage of choice of samurais. They traditionally drank it to help them cultivate heightened levels of focus and calm their minds before battle.

So if it was good enough for them, it's certainly good enough for me!

This is the one I get, which is legit Japanese Matcha:

27374

You can get it from Whole Foods or Amazon.

The brand is important because there's some really mediocre quality matcha out there.

I grow a lot of herbs in my garden (no not those herbs..anymore haha), and lately I found out that peppermint/rosemary is, for me personally, a better stimulant to get through those graveyard nightshifts.
I can highly recommend a good dose of that sh!t to get alive 'n kicking.

If you only need performance just go with caffeine pills. Cheaper, faster and doesn't irritate anything (coffee destroys stomach, teeth, ecc.)

And mix it up with L-Theanine so you will not have the side effect of anxiety, nervousity and restlesness.

That's the best and safer stack.

Every 4 weeks don't forget to do 1 week totally caffeine free, so that your body resets and you don't need to increase the dose overtime in order to have the same effects.

Neither. Try green or black tea and add a bit of honey.
Personally, I don't trust any kind of energy drinks especially stuff like Bang, Monster and Red Bull. Seems loaded with tons of "proprietary" chemicals they didn't declare on the label.
