Hello,
I am YoungnBroke and I am currently 16.
I joined this forum a year ago and back then I was really enthusiastic about building up a Buisness. But in the last year a lot of bad shit happened in my life I started drinking shortly after my 15 birthday and about 2 months after that I started smoking weed. And I think December last year I started smoking on a daily bases. My longest (sad) streak was smoking 90 days in a row and round about 3 joints a day. Of course my school suffered from this. Now I came to the realization that all of this getting drunk and high shit destroys my teenager life and I want to pursue in buisness again. That's why I worked in the summer and have a budget of 400$ to start. Yeah that's how I f*cked up my life in 6 months.

Welcome back to reality. Actually, it doesn't sound like you have done any permanent damage to your life. We all make young and dumb mistakes. If you didn't have a crash and hurt or kill someone, didn't get arrested and incarcerated, pretty much everything else can be worked out. You have, probably, burned some bridges and violated some trusts. Those are going to take time and effort to rebuild. You are very young and you have 80-90% of your life ahead of you. Your recovery and success will not be linear, it will be very messy, so expect and plan for that.

You also may have a bias toward addiction. It helps to know that about yourself and be ever vigilant so that you do not get addicted to substances.

I wish you well on your journey.

You have identified the problem (drinking and smoking) so whats the action plan going forward?

What do you want your life to look like in one year?

Divide that year into 12 months.

What needs to happen each month to ensure that by the end of 12 months you have reached that year goal?

Map it out.

Then what do you need to do weekly to get to where you need to be that month?

Daily?

Then take action.

Grab a legal pad and a pen. The first page is your One year goal. 365 days from now your life looks like: [Write it on the pad]

The next twelve pages are:
  • Month One
  • Month Two
  • Month Three
Do that for 12 pages.

At the top of each page write that months goal. All 12 monthly goals, when added up, should equal your yearly goal.

Under the goal divide the rest of the page up into sections to represent the 4 weeks in a month. In each section write what you have to accomplish each week to get to your monthly goal.

You are planning your year and planning your success. Take the time and do it.

Hey Man,

Read your post and thought I may be able to help. I'm 28 right now and did the same thing when I was younger. In my mid 20's my drinking and smoking habits were really bad and similar to what you describe. But fortunately I started doing martial arts (BJJ) when I was 23 years old and stopped drinking and smoking ever since. I no longer have the desire to drink or smoke.

So if you currently don't follow any exercise routine I'd highly recommend you start doing something with your body like weight training, a sport, or martial art. Another thing that helped me is I stopped hanging out with the people I smoked and drank with. It may be difficult, but it worked out for me.

Also keep in mind your only 15 years old.

When people in business experience a sense of exhaustion, emotional wearinesss, the real underlying problem is loneliness. That brings entrepreneurs to full stop.
This info comes from a great book that you won't need for another few years called "Dare to Lead."
I hope you stay on th forum, keep connected to others who don't smoke weed religiously, and find a group of young entrepreneurs. Believe it or not, librarians often know where tech groups and maker/biz events are going on - free. I think you need the safety net of others, no offense but it's only human.

Good luck, I'm keeping my fingers crossed you'll make it through the jungle soon enough. Try the library as an info source for credible meet-ups.

I have a mild food addiction issue. I use eating as a response to stress.

To counter this I never have any snacks or soft drink in the fridge. Zero.

My advice to you is to understand your weakness and “declare war on it”. It is not going to work if you still want to drink socially or smoke weed once a while. You cannot do it. Just like I cannot have food in the fridge.

Someone else can drink socially. I can. I totally do not find alcohol addictive. You cannot.

Hey,

I am in a similair boat, dealing with it for a year or 2. Maybe you can learn from what is working for me. So you can skip all the fases before. I hope so.

I am 23 now. Have smoked for 6 years. Not always daily but 3 times a week at least. Obviously it costed a lot of years at university and a lot of productivity. Now i came off from highschool as the popular guy so it took me a lot of time to see that there was a problem. Since i could ride my reputation in my hometown. But after moving to another city I really wasn't that special. Either way still dealing with it but it see it as a great battle. I mean every small step you take is kind of beautiful and you are so young.

Recently I started making systems for myself and that really helped. Like plan out groceries and only buy healthy food I like. Morning routine, evening routine, gym routine. I wirte everything down and past it on my walls in my room. Sounds crazy maybe but it really helps. Just started doing it tho so still have to prove consistency.

I also learned im very prone to addiction. So no 'one time only cocaine' when going out for me. I smoke sigarets, which I'm going to deal with later. Try to take small steps and not do everything at once.

For now for example I, put what i want to do on trello (project management tool) and have an overview, paid all bills that were open so I feel better and can work to a better future. With all the routines and planning I kinda constantly force myself everyday to look at what I have to do and what I want to be. Before it was 1 week of good behavior and than 3 weeks of smoking again and than I was like okey, lets try again, obviously that leads to nothing. CONSISTENCY IS KEY. But it can be really hard.

You're 16 so my advice is, try to map ur days out, have goals to achieve, don't focus on what others are doing and keep going. With how well you described your problems you are so much further and more experienced already than most of your age. Take that as a big plus and now figure it out.

Goodluck.

FWIW... I see a need that should be addressed.

I am a school teacher and I do recognize the script and the danger of the script.

I also see another and equal danger, in you and other young men. They see the fallacy of the script and jump off the education band wagon and have high hopes and no plans. Many see videos and dollar signs and think they too will be a baller if they just quit school and tell everyone to f*ck off. Their immaturity cannot process the magnitude of work it will take to get off the script and be successful.

The script is the simple, easy path and we are all groomed for it. Be assured that if you jump off you will take the harder life and it will require more from you. It ain't easy to blaze your own path.

You will have to dedicate your whole being to this. Drugs and alcohol diminish your capability to navigate this path. Instagram, youtube, and others make it look glamorous and amazing. THE INDEPENDENT LIFESTYLE WILL NOT BE EASY. It will crush you sometimes. You need to reread about MJ's early struggles in his books. You also need to read about other's Dead End Sh*t Jobs.

Anyone here that has had any success has busted their a$$ for it. You will have to also. Are you up for it? Do you have a real plan? Alcohol and weed are escapes, they are not a plan.
