I've been reading and listening to many books for a LONG TIME. After years of this I realized how little knowledge remains usable and accessible no matter how good it is.

I started using Quizlet a while ago to review and retain key usable points from all the best books I've read inspired by reading Make it Stick.

According to research reviewing and rereading is almost useless as most people do it.

I'd like to offer most of my Quizlet decks ( some are personal ) to whomever is serious about lifelong learning and improvment, BUT I'm asking for something in return, that YOU start and post Your OWN decks for everyone to benefit from also.

Please make your decks not suck, and I also recommend you read Make it Stick or my eventual post here on HOW to properly study based on research.

If you're not doing this, or using what you LEARN fairly frequently, most of it will be lost/wasted.

This intrigues me. Memory is the seat of the soul...

I don’t know how to make a deck “not suck” my magical giftedness lies in connecting with ppl and giving them space to share, not necessarily as a stand alone product.. but I’m definitely curious about the deck.

Will you be sharing it in this thread?

you should use journals

this is your own thoughts about what you learned in a book. this is priceless

and you can add your own creativity and understanding of things

i wish i could read Jim Rohn , jeff Walker , Jay Abraham or Eben Pagan 's journals

this is worth millions of dollars.

Awesome idea!! This is the best forum I've ever seen, I think I've found my digital tribe here:)

Journalling does something similar to flashcards ( IFF you write your own ) in one specific way. It generates deeper level processing. Charles Duhigg taught me about "disfluency" in his book Smarter, Better Faster. This is GOLD for understanding and getting insight into any topic because you're forced to slow down and think about what you've learned.

Technically disfluency is to make something HARDER to process and is probably why research shows students who take hand notes rather than type into a laptop actually retain and understand more in lectures because they're forced to prioritize and think more deeply about what to write and not write
since they can't write fast enough to record everything the teacher says.

Guy 93777, you're so right and this is another thing absolutely critical for understanding ( but insufficient for retention ). I'm an English teacher in Japan and I teach young kids through heads of R & D in international Japanese companies, and I remind my students virtually every class "Don't memorize, understand the meaning!!!" All Japanese students master memorization ( as they understand it ) through mindless and mostly ineffective repetition, but most are largely incapable of USING what they've learned.

Credit to my student Hiroki for finding this gem:)

While remembering is important, vocabulary are tools, and if you know it's called "saw" but you don't know how to use it, the neurosurgery won't go as planned.

I think Duhigg talks about reflection, mental models and journaling is in that wheelhouse. Daniel Coyle talks about it a lot in the Talent Code, and also Deliberate Practice which K. Anders Ericsson is the expert on. Read both, Coyle is a great writer but missed ( or I missed ) a critical detail about Deliberate Practice that Ericsson makes much clearer in Peak.

If I was forced to choose, I hate to admit it in my own post about memory but understanding and mental models built through journaling and WRITING YOUR OWN FLASHCARDS trumps and underlies memory and retention. That said, we don't have to choose you can ( and should ) combine both to produce superior
results.

A final nice trick that comes to mind...

教えることは学ぶことです To teach is to learn. My favorite Japanese Proverb.

Since none of us have enough finite time to read EVERY book worth reading please do yourself the favor of
writing your own Quizlet deck, then everyone the favor of sharing it.

I'm gonna have to be careful in this forum, it's just too fun to participate here. If you see me posting excessively, call me on it, I need to spend the majority of my time executing on my Fastlane:arghh:

BTW I love Jim Rohn ( save the religiosity ) he's still one of my favorites.
"I will climb this mountain or die upon it."

Yes I will, that's the purpose of my post, I just want others to share their knowledge in decks too so we can all win.

By "not suck" I mean please take enough care and time pick the gems ( as you see them ) from the larger text. My largest deck is around 150 cards and that is probably to 10 books worth of cards. I'm so behind on my decks, it's not a priority right now. But it doesn't take that long to make a decent deck, and you can set them to be editable if you wish, though I recommend you keep an uneditable copy deck just in case something goes terribly wrong.

All I'm saying is please don't just copy and paste huge blocks of rote text from the book notes, be
selective about making cards from key concepts that would be useful and usable for anyone.
