I am being a lurker in this forum since a few years back but decided to sign up few weeks ago though I have not posted yet. Today shall be the day!

I am nearly 40 years and I quit my job 3 years back to pursue a life in mobile app development. I have since created several apps since in various fields. Though I do not have a very high download count for my apps, but based on the feedback I have gotten, they do make a little difference in some of my users' life.

When I first started, my monthly income was simply a fraction of what I earned previously but I did not give up and continue to develop more apps that I believe some people may find use for. Finally my income stabilises in the past year and now I am earning as much as I am working for someone. I hope I can continue to do better as it is hard to imagine myself working for others again. :)

Welcome at long last @AppleUnited. What was the impulse that made you step out of the shadows after just lurking for several years?

Interesting topic of conversation.

How did you manage to make the transition from leaving your job and earning very little to now?

What model(s) do you prefer regarding monetising your apps? Free with ads. Paid. Free with a paid premium version or a subscription base?

What have been your hardest challenges to overcome?

Thanks for the welcome. I hope my story is not too boring as I see many threads here are about how they can make money very fast and at a young age.

Couple of reasons. The lack of job satisfaction and the long hours in my previous job made me wonder I much more I can probably achieve if I were to put in the same amount of effort into doing something I believe in.

As I have worked more than 10 years, I do have some savings to tide me through even if it doesn’t work out well. I gave myself two years to at least earn enough money from my own business to pay my expenses without eating into my savings.

I started off with free with ads and this model doesn’t work well because my apps require a server which means a high user base will require higher server cost. Moreover, the revenue from advertisement is very inconsistent. In the end, I used the model of free app with limited features and a subscription to unlock all. This model gives me a recurring revenue to sustain my business.

My hardest challenge now is how to outsource some of my work as I am doing everything myself. I am actually becoming the obstacle to my business!

So far, I have enjoyed the fact that I can be in control of my destiny. The journey is tough and at times lonely but it is way better than being tied in a job that I might lose anytime no matter how much hard work I put in. I am also looking forward to one day achieving exponential growth. :)

Good luck my friend! And keep us posted of anything about your journey.

Welcome @AppleUnited and thanks for sharing your experience!

I saw a survey on the forum recently:
If I remember well, out of the 200 people who had taken the survey, more than half had not had a successful business yet.

So your current results can definitely be an inspiration for many!

Interesting topic of conversation.

Your previous job was already as an app developer?

Or did you learn mobile app development skills because that is how you wanted to add value/ make a difference in people's life?

Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I was working as software developer and eventually a technical lead of a team of developers. For my core business, I needed to learn trading (stock, forex, etc) to develop the apps. This is something totally new to me previously. Other than that, I also developed several small utility apps. This is more for the general public. They bring in very little money but makes a difference in someone's life. :)
