Yeh Australia is cooked at the moment, i had a job interview today and the gentleman made me a great offer!

Have to use my own ABN $150 a day he would pay me but take my superannuation and tax of that it works out to about $70 a day, i laughed and walked out, he said are we close to whats enough?

I said you aint even in the same ball park mate, and the guy wanted an immediate start.

No wonder he wanted an immediate start, i dont know any moron who would take that considering he wanted me to work 6 days a week and welfare is more.

I'm afraid there is no escaping taxes in today's world. In fact the recording and control of transactions only increases with new technologies and rules.

If it's a NY tax, you aren't going to pay the IRS. The IRS is a federal agency.

I'm not sure you understand what a "civilized society" is. We've moved past the point where certain people only have 3/5 of a vote.
If you truly think you come out ahead by being on social programs, why not join the ranks? You can then do the work you're passionate about for free. Win-win for everyone.

I'm all for paying as little taxes as possible, and I agree that tax proceeds aren't exactly used efficiently, but I don't really think that's the same as weighting the value of a person's vote for arbitrary reasons. If I make $1million this year, but only $500k next year, do I only get half a vote next year? If people have a physical or mental hurdle, is their vote worth less because they contribute less to society? Is human value that arbitrary to you?

Why do you think votes should be based on age? Are you giving more votes to young people (who are accused of wanting handouts), or more votes to old people (who mostly live on social programs), or middle-aged people who will want to make sure social programs are there when they are old?

I worry that people complaining about taxes forget about what those taxes pay for. There are a lot of things my tax dollars pay for that I don't agree with, but overall, I'm thankful for the place I live in and the freedoms it gives me. If that means I pay the government some money, then that's the "sacrifice" I'll make. If you're paying taxes, it means you're earning money.

oh yea you're right I double checked payroll email, they said "resident tax", and did not mention the IRS. my bad.

im over it now, it is what it is, and no taxes can fully prevent an unscripted life.

I guess I was just mad because when I got the new job I was hoping to finally save "a lot" of money fast, so I could quit in a year or 2 and get part time job and just keep working on the Fastlane.

I didn't expect to lose 25% of every paycheck, it really slows down my monthly savings, cause that's an extra 500 bucks Im not saving(maybe the tax return will help a bit)

I've been reading up on how the U.S. functioned before income taxes, they relied mostly on tariffs and had temporary taxation once in a while. Every time the whiff of permanent taxation was in the air, the public response was quite severe, people weren't used to that concept as we are now.

I also believe tax brackets are not fair. You really are being penalized for success.
Even in Russia they use flat 15% tax. That seems fairer to me.

If I were rich I wouldn't abuse tax havens, but I would try to lower my effective taxation to something fairer.
I think I can be the judge of how to use my own money versus it going into some bureaucratic black hole.

Pay more taxes, you evil evil capitalist

Funny how the useful idiots always seem to be protesting during work hours.

How does someone have nothing to do but chant "tax the rich" on the county steps with your politician-paid protestor sign at 10AM on a Tuesday, Wednesday and a Thursday?

Oh yea that's right, none of them have jobs.

What happened? Whats your plan now?

well yesterday i was in the basement during my break and did close my eyes for a bit, tired as hell from trying to get used to that early rising routine as discussed in my other thread lol
and my immediate supervisor barges in lol, of course the guy seemed to have it out for me for some time now. Everyone including the supervisor come in late plenty.
The supervisor is a major tool too, working 12 hours a day with no overtime pay, my coworkers and I questioned his sanity on the regular.

The whole company is def one of the most shoddily ran tech places i've ever seen, several people have left in the last few months anyway. Its like all the tech solutions to various problems were whipped up without thinking of long term consequences. The company is afloat because the idea for the service they provide is pretty genius, whoever thought of it originally is definitely a multi-millionaire. but goddamn is the execution bad lol.

I was gonna quit by the end of winter myself, was hoping to save up at least 10,000, but will have to settle for 4000.

i have met the 6 month minimum to qualify for unemployment, so ima do that monday and start looking for non office jobs. i fukin hate office jobs, i gave this one a chance after my first 4 year stint, but it didn't get any better.

No more office jobs man... id rather do mcdonalds. i spend enough time in front of a monitor working on my apps.
i can't be doing 12 hours a day in front of a computer anymore lol

Lol sleeping on duty, nice :rofl:

But on the other hand, was the job that bad? I mean you were making enough to be in a new tax bracket, could you not have put some good work in to keep some stability for a while?

The tax rates in EU are pretty ridiculous, especially the VAT which you cannot avoid. But it's not THAT much different here in the US.

What's funny is that depending on the state you live in (here in America), your rate can easily surpass 50%. A top earner who derives most of his income from self-employment (1099) can expect to pay around 55% in taxes in California. Income tax, capital gains tax, sales tax, property tax, excise tax, SE (15.3% up to a threshold) tax, gas tax, etc. Thank god I no longer live in California.

This is why every time the state government (any state government) asks voters to spend money for the [insert "special" group like "the kids," the "elderly," etc.] I always vote NO.

It always means more taxes later on and the government never cuts the spending until a recession/"budget crisis." Not to mention we already spend a sh*t ton of $$$ on schools and yet their performance(s) are still horrible. Some kids are "barely literate" after graduating high school because they keep dumbing down the tests and lowering the passing grade. SMH!

People always cry about how the United States is some "evil right-wing country" when from an economics perspective, the taxes are only slightly below what you would pay in EU/Canada. I calculated what I would pay in my current state (Utah) if I earned at the top rate or more and it's something like 44%.

This is why it's absolutely imperative you switch to a corporate (K-1) or investor mindset.

Some kids are "barely literate" after graduating high school because they keep dumbing down the tests and lowering the passing grade. SMH!
I think they did some 'dumbing down' for my Malaysian high school final exams (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia), which determines your tertiary education options.

History passing grade was rumoured to be around 5 marks. PASSING.
(Yet some folks still failed this paper. It's a compulsory paper to pass if you want the certificate)

Additional Maths passing grade was rumoured to be around 5 marks as well. 'A' grade may have been as low as 68-70.

Folks who really put in their hard work and effort would have no problem acing the high school finals. But with that 'dumbing down', of course the kids that just got through by the skin of their teeth would suffer later when they cannot cope with the tougher tertiary studies like A-levels or bachelors.

I don't understand why they pass everybody and anybody. What is there to determine who wins and who loses?

And everyone should technically be able to pass their exams. Forget the As or Bs. A midnight-oil last minute hash can net a 50 marks over 100. (not recommended though) :(

And not to forget that I have ran into UNIVERSITY folks who don't know that a Google Scholar even exists, or how to optimize your Internet research by choosing better keywords. Pretty bad computer literacy. At this rate, we ain't gonna have AI or quantum computing running full-steam in this century.

The tax rates in EU are pretty ridiculous, especially the VAT which you cannot avoid. But it's not THAT much different here in the US.
Here in Malaysia, its a little different.

In 50+ years, we have a new government in place.

They were horrified to find that the old regime had been playing the numbers and cash, paying tons of handouts to cronies and poorly planned projects. So they cancelled a ton of projects, especially those joint with China, and enacted taxes and cut ministerial costs/ payroll to service the debt.

They cut off the 6% GST and are working to cut the road tolls, but they are replacing GST with an SST, which doesn't tax as many categories as GST did or burden consumers needlessly. But they added more taxes related to foreign imports and business, foreigners purchase of land and vehicle/property purchase.

But I cannot help but wonder as to how long would the government need to service the debt/ mess of the previous administration. Will the additional taxes be temporary? I thought of the Phillipines, which is still trying to cover the Ferdinand Marcos mess. As far as I know, it is still eaten at by corruption and poor business infrastructure/ecosystem.

I try not to despise governments, but I'd like to see more reasonable taxation policies that aren't just there for the sake of taxation.

This is why every time the state government (any state government) asks voters to spend money for the [insert "special" group like "the kids," the "elderly," etc.] I always vote NO.
Support private charities/social enterprises that deal with these problems then with your cash.

I just joined a new church a few months back. There's always work available to help out. Rural reas development, language classes for refugees, soup kitchens...all these need money, never mind energy if you don't have time, and doesn't need government to pop in.

In fact, I think the government is happier to have you help out. Might be tax deductible as well.
