Fastlane mindset is not in my direction..

Yesterday I was arguing with a friend, he was persuaded that reducing expenses ( driving a cheaper car, buying food in bulk ) and getting a 5% raise every year was a better long term strategy than increasing revenues by taking risks

Nope - Reddit is a shithole for entrepreneurship. That’s where smart discussions go to die.

Exactly, thats why its surprising to find fastlane mentioned on there lol. It's like a needle in a haystack xD

Nice to see that whomever posted it knew that the book was popular, but not "mainstream."

I don't like this mindset of dismissing an entire website of ~250 million people. I've personally learned a lot from reddit that has helped my business succeed, and I know many others that can say the same.

It's a tool, just like this forum is.

Yes, it is a tool. Still, it is akin to a gun. A gun can get you meat from the woods or take an innocent life.

At times, you can get some pretty harsh crap from armchair folks or naysayers who don't have a stitch of validation about them. And should other folks choose to bandwagon on them, they get led astray like sheep to a slaughter.

But for entrepreneurship, we'd expect more supportive and no BS channels, given its challenges.

Hah! I just don't think calling a forum of 250 million people a shithole is a very productive conversation. Reddit can be used in so many different ways.
Reddit is useful. I use it everyday. Sometimes it can be toxic to a budding entrepreneur/entrepreneurial mindset.

Criticism is good, but Reddit doesn’t always have smart criticism.

Yes, Reddit is filled with very smart people across a huge range of fields. Reddit is my 'go to' resource for all things tech related, for example. I've yet to not find an answer to even the hardest technical question there. Similarly they have one of the most positive homebrewing sections on the web. And a million other useful gems.

Here's the thing: their demographic is young (college/uni/young adult) and extremely liberal.

Business and conservative (even centrist) political discussion goes there to die.

Go spend 10 minutes at /r/business or /r/entrepreneur or /r/getmotivated you'll immeidately find the following: anti-business talk at the business subreddit, anti-success talk at the entrepreneur subreddit, and demotivational content in the getmotivated subreddit.

Reddit users have victim complexes and an extremely external locus of control.

So yeah, it's a huge community, one of the largest online, and the grey matter content there is off the chart, but the demographics make it a toxic wasteland for any discussion around business, money, positivity and success, generally speaking.

While I agree with the generalization that Reddit is an echo-chamber of liked-minded thinkers, there are a lot of people there in the shadows who do not post, kinda like a "silent majority".

Reddit has been instrumental in getting my message out, despite the bitter armchair dreampreneurs clinging to "do what you love."

I lot of folks here are from Reddit and I bet they many of them weren't active contributors there, but fit into that "silent majority" category.

For example, I just got this today via email:

I don't know about the other business subreddits. But there is an industry specific one that has been beyond valuable to me and helped me meet many people instrumental to my success.

There's so many people that there's bound to be lots of shit. Like New York City you get millionaires and criminals. You have to find nice little corners

Reddit is an invaluable resource when used properly.

Where else can you tap into the minds of basically any niche in the world? And for free...

1. Doing ecommerce product research on an item in the guitar niche? There's 350,000 users just waiting to answer your questions and give you market feedback.

2. Looking for your next fastlane idea? Use the AMA's to your advantage while using idea extraction methods.

Most AMA's get very little replies while the OP's are expecting to become famous from it. They have mentally set aside this time to interact with Reddit users, so most people are happy to chat with you. Firemen, dentists, doctors, paramedics, police officers, carpenters, etc... Such a wide variety of industry knowledge.

I start with an initial comment such as "What frustrates you most when doing XYZ"? This usually ends up getting a generic answer. That's when I move the conversation to private chat and get them on Skype if they are willing.

3. Still couldn't find an idea? Browse the DIY or LPT (life pro tips) section and see what innovative Reddit users are coming up with themselves.

4. Have a comedic marketing campaign that you think has a possibility of going viral? Post it to the "funny" subreddit and you might make the front page and get free advertising space worth thousands.
