Have you seen the movie? If you have, what were your thoughts?
I thought it was well played and reminded me when I read the book (if you haven't, please read it or at least see the movie). The movie did an excellent job portraying the most important parts of the book that had strong meanings.
For starters, the story takes place in an era of decayed social and moral values. Its overarching cynicism, greed, and empty pursuit of pleasure serve as evidence. The rise of the money market emphasized the need for materialism and the end of World War I left many men hopeless, but not Gatsby.
I thought that the green light signified Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for the future. The first association is, of course, with Daisy. He was constantly reaching towards it in the darkness as a guiding light to lead him to his goal. The green light also symbolizes that more generalized ideal. The movie showed the decline of the American dream, the difference between social classes, the role of symbols in the human conception of meaning, the role of the past in dreams of the future.
