help me over come an issue...its such a minor isse too...

I have trust issues. When it comes to my business ideas, i always have issues telling people for fear of them stealing my ideas. I know that it is so important in business to bounce ideas off different people for feedback. My father is the same way (obviously where i get my issues from) and it has hindered some of his success. We are currently working on a second business together in a niche market but between the two of us, we are having issues trusting people who could potentially help us, but on the flip side, easily take our idea and implement it themselves. What do you guys think?

If there's one thing I have learned from this forum, it's that very few people are actually willing to take action (present company excluded, of course). People talk a good game but very few have the drive and determination to back up their talk with blood, sweat and tears.

My point is that you shouldn't worry too much about people stealing your ideas and running with them. If your idea is very good, someone's going to steal it anyway once you go into business. Focus on being better than the competition rather than trying to be the only player in the game.

Being serious...I have come to a point where I just don't care anymore. If they steal the idea (which someone will as soon as they realize is a good idea), do it better and crush them, you have the advantage of being first and having the know-how. That's it.

Ideas are a dime a dozen. They are worth almost *nothing*. The people who have the means to copy you, 9 times out of 10 are going to be too darn busy to even try to copy you. Your neighbor, friends, who cares? Let them try. Taking a raw idea with nothing else to a level that throws off wild profits can take years of work.

I've shared some very timely, and my most valuable ideas with business associates. Often they go on and do very well with them, if they have the competence to carry them out to completion to begin with. Those associates end up becoming very valuable to me as a result. Several have businesses that stand in direct competition to mine. So what?

If you are worried about people stealing your ideas, I would venture to guess you just don't have that much business experience to begin with.

I also suffered from this, but what i found is that when I thought about it, turning my idea into a reality was scary for me and I really believed in it because I came up with it. Others will have less belief in it because they lack the true ownership of the idea. And because they lack that true ownership their fear is much greater than yours and they are less likely to act. The majority of people want the money and credit that comes with being a TRAILBLAZER, but they want the security and ease that comes with PAVED ROADS.

Ideas are indeed a dime a dozen. It's the implementation of those ideas that makes a difference. Talking about it doesn't do a thing.

I NEVER sign NDAs. Early on in my career, I did..and what a mistake. Someone would have an idea similiar to something I was already working on (so now I'm screwed because I've signed an NDA and if I implement my idea that's already in the works, they could potentially come after me) and their "deal" is for me to put my personnel, expertise, money and time behind their idea and we'd split the money. Why would I do that?

There are basically two ways you can make a lot of money: innovate and come up with something new or do it faster, cheaper, better. I am an innovator, I like coming in at the beginning of something and charging more per item. As soon as someone says they're "just like Diane's xyz, only cheaper" I know it's time to innovate again.

On the other hand, there is a lot of money to be made in doing things more efficiently.

Either way - it takes DOING to get to the paycheck.

I disagree about not posting your ideas on the board. I've gotten terrific insight on some of the things I've posted regarding my business. And here I thought I knew it all already....

But if you post an idea, not prepared to act on it, and then someone else does...it's not their fault. It's your own.

I would still avoid posting your next big idea until certain preparations and protections have been made. I can bounce big idea off my slow lane friends, and (worst case scenario) I'll have to listen to their story about how they've always wanted to have their own flower shop or some crap.

My point was that a higher percentage of the readers here have the time and money to grab an idea and sprint to market.

Respectfully, are you getting good and constructive feedback from friends that are stuck in the slow lane? I'd rather chat with people of similar mindset that can challenge me and my ideas rather than a bunch of people that will just nod in approval with anything I say.

thanks to everybody who has posted, i have actually made strides in over coming this ridiculous fear. I have been talking and collaborating with out side sources regarding my newest venture. thanks again!
