Here are some real gems. All of those are filled with specific, actionable ideas.
Thomas Kurz. "Stretching Scientifically."
Extremely solid information from this Eastern-European coach and author. If you want to kick very high, this book will teach you how. It did teach me. You can also injure yourself badly if you are not properly conditioned and/or not able to follow instructions to the letter.
Thomas Kurz. "Science of Sports Training."
This book delivers some solid principles of approaching exercise.
James Lawrence. "Iron Hope".
This is for mindset/motivation by the dude who did 100 Ironman Triathlons in 100 consecutive days. For most people, doing Ironman once would be a crowning achievement -- a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and then on top of that, running a full marathon. The Iron Cowboy describes just how badly it hurt and what he did about it.
Matt Fitzgerald. "How bad do you want it."
Despite the cheesy name, this is a surprisingly practical book for improving athletic performance. Not some nonsense about visualization. Just one astonishing fact from the book: research found that runners/bicyclists who focus on their breathing... get tired faster and perform worse than those who do not focus on their body at all. Most of the book is retelling stories of actual competitors, but it is more practical than entertaining.
Matt Fitzgerald. "The endurance diet."
A suprisingly simple approach to eating that can be applied not just to the endurance sports.
Sally Winston and Martin Seim. "Overcoming unwanted intrusive thoughts."
Not about sports/exercise per se, but I just wanted to list this one because the information is so solid.
Gail Eisen and Philip Friedman. "The Pilates method..."
A 1980 book on Pilates mat work that nails it. Back in the day I learned Pilates by just following this book every day over and over.
