I am writing this post because I expected to be further down the Fastlane by now but I spent too many hours watching endless shows, movies or sports instead of making goals and building a side business that would allow me to exceeding the income I make as an employee. I’m upset because I wasted the last 22 years. Now it’s crunch time and I have to figure it out with even less time.
I created a Shopify dropshipping store where I sold outdoor gear like kayaks, coolers and multi-sport strollers but I found out quickly that kayaks don’t ship cheaply and even though I got sales after paying for ads. The shipping cost at all the margins. The coolers were the best product the shipping was affordable but I couldn’t get more volume of sales. Another good product were the strollers but this was the one product that we actually got stock for. It was a lot of work processing the orders and shipping out the products. So I suspended the store. I was thinking I could reopen it with a focus on dogs but that’s still TBD.
Over the years, I would do some freelancing but never enough to really take things to the next level where I didn’t have to do a 9-5 but it did supplement my income, I worked with various web design agencies and software companies as a freelancer and with small businesses as a freelancer. I also was a realtor on the side in Texas when I lived there. I spent the last 9 years in CA and recently moved to AZ.
I have a background in software development and DevOps with 12 years of experience and computer science undergraduate degree.
My goal for 2026 is to create passive income for myself so that on my birthday this year I can leave. I like how @MJ DeMarco created a SaaS product and I have been thinking about that and how I might leverage my background to get there. I also have thought about building a consulting business offering my experience in software and DevOps to help small to mid-size businesses.
I still love real estate so I plan to get my license and build a real estate referral website.
I plan to provide updates here. Need to set a deadline and carve a path to get to the land of W2 free! See you in the Fastlane!
