Uh? This is one of the oldest games in the human experience. I had many, many offers to be a kept woman when I was single, young, and cute. I had offers of marriage tied to agreements to pay me millions when they got tired of me and divorced me. It was all preplanned and cold. They were asking to pay me for the years they planned to spend with me. I knew I would be replaced in 5 years or less with someone younger and cuter than me -- or they wanted to trade me off for a friend's woman. (Yes, I knew that the men around me traded their women like a mere possession, or a useful appliance.) They were asking me to be a long-term, high-priced escort. Yuck! This is an interesting topic, so long participants can keep it civil, after-all this is not a men’s room section.
Actually “soft girls” culture is reemerging. You see influencers talking about this happening in Scandinavian countries. Full time girlfriends getting a pay cheque from boyfriends I don’t think it’s something new. This thing always existed. It is just coming out to destigmatize it. It’s like saying we are going to do this openly and getting more girls to join us. Stop calling us gold diggers.
It’s not surprising. I really see something like this coming kind of long ago. The best days for women are actually in the days of high economics expansion 90s and 2000s and to an extent the early years of 2010.
When economics is growing rapidly (fueled by eats credit and debt level increasing). Women have more access to economics opportunities.
This is also accompanied by non-cyclical long term trend that women do better in academics than average boys in school.
At the same times men are making more money and accessing more resources. They are to spend more money to chase women to prove their manhood. This created a perfect opportunity for women where they can “have the cake and eat it”, gaining access to greater economics opportunity and investing their time there, while having men playing the traditional norm to chase after them and investing resources on them.
Fast forward today with more economics uncertainty it is a totally different. Growth is slower. Men and women are both feeling it. Women are going to suffer more because they tend to be in more easily replaceable roles. Men are less interested in women and less able to invest in women and women in turn are haunted by scarcity mindset and beginning hunting for an even smaller pool of eligible men.
One of the country that went a full cycle on this is Japan. In the 1980s Japanese economy was at their peak and so was the modern feminist narrative. There was a joke about women needing four boyfriends at the same time,
All these evaporated quickly as fast as the collapse of their real estate bubble.
- A rich businessman – to pay for her luxurious lifestyle.
- A handsome young man – to keep her entertained and happy.
- A serious and reliable guy – for emotional support and future stability.
- A secret lover – for passion and excitement.
Over the past 15 years SGD/Yen doubled. Japanese economy in still freefalling.
I foresee the next wave will be the reemergence of feminine goals driven by economic scarcity, but ironically this time will be most men trying their best to run away from such responsibility.
I have always worked and I had a great career. I wouldn't date anyone in my business world. I was nice when I turned them down. Sometimes they would up the cash in their marriage offer when I said no. It was mildly insultings. My main goal was to be respected for my brains and business skills. I knew I would quickly age out of that bracket where they would be willing to keep me. I had a long-term plan to take care of myself and my children without relying on that kind of arrangement.
Yes, I have remarried. My husband is a truly kind man and I'm his whole world. We are growing old together -- enjoying our grown kids and grandkids. I sure am glad I held out for the real thing.
