I am starting this thread to document my journey in gaining skills that would enable me achieve financial freedom.

I have been a member of this forum for while, since around 2021, when I first read the Millionaire Fastlane . I am in college right now, studying civil engineering, but I've always been interested in tech and particularly web development ( I know, cliche). I wanted to be able to master this skill as a self-taught, and take one of the following routes: employment (remote preferably) , freelance, or start my own saas.

I want to be able to support my family after i am done with college; securing a job in my field is a hustle if you don't happen to have the right contacts. So this is a way of ensuring i have a fall back plan in case things don't work out. Plus I'll be able to work on something that i actually enjoy.

Once I master this skill, I may branch out into other fields, probably mobile development, or cyber security.

This week was a a bit slow in terms of progress. I couldn't complete most of my target projects coz the wifi had issues but has finally been fixed.
On the brighter side, I wrote an article about UI design principles for developers. Will add a link later on.

This week i would like to finish the two projects from last week , one of which helps me learn how to integrate mongodb with nextjs using an ORM such as Prisma.
I am also looking forward to learning some python for data science for a side project.

That's all, see you next week.

Nice, I've been using python to automate some marketing efforts at my job, with interesting results.

And also triying to set up React client with Mongodb - express.js and firebase for login to launch my first full stack app product.

If you've been there do you think I should go a step further and also try to learn nextjs and Prisma to make life easier ?

Hi there, yes I would advise you to learn nextjs, it really streamlines the process of building web apps; and since you already know a decent amount of react, nextjs is gonna be easy for you to comprehend. About Prisma, I've heard a lot of complaints about migration issues with it. But if that's not gonna be a problem for your app, go for it. You could also look into another ORM such as Drizzle.

this week i have really been focused with doing python projects, coz thats the best way to learn python (or any other language really). i haven't really progressed that much in nextjs, i have been struggling with the prisma integration project and looks like i will have to find a different fix and probably come back to it later on.

for the coming week, i am planning to do 4 nextjs projects, including a quiz app, ecommerce app, crud app, and a recipe sharing app. these are meant to be learning projects so, nothing fancy.
on the python front, i would like to get into more advanced projects since i have covered much of the basics such as web scrapers, calculator, password generator etc. i want to do atleast 4 projects this week for python too.
unfortunately for this week, i havent completed the article about computer networking. but i will be done with it by tomorrow

Seems I over-estimated my coding capabilities for last week's target projects . I still haven't completed two of the 4 projects. This may be partly due to analysis paralysis, where i'm trying to optimize code that I haven't even written yet.
This week's agenda is to complete the remaining projects from last week, and then possibly get into backend with node and expressJS. Not much left to say, I'll get back to it then.

Hey Bryan,

From what I have seen so far, it seems you might be going a little too fast and too hard for your own good. While I can sense a lot of enthusiasm and optimism, what if you are also shooting yourself in the foot by tackling so many projects at once ?

What I think would be a good idea is try to stick to one project and for one good reason. I am a big fan of learning new tech but I was prey to "learning for the sake of learning" and it would be a huge waste of time for you to fall into that.
I do not really know how far you are into mastering any tool from your comments but I'd highly suggest sticking to one tool and finding a small but real problem encountered by someone (or even yourself) to solve.

That will be both a good thinking exercise for you in terms of business as you could try to market it (even getting free users is hard trust me) and put that in a real portfolio as well as a real development exercise, where you hopefully get users and manage their feedback and even more.

What do you think ?

All the best.
Chris.

Yeah. That's exactly what I was about to tell the brother right here.
