Hey guys, haven't been active in a while. My company is taking off and I'm putting in a lot more work than I used to while it grows...

I wanted to pop on here and ask if anyone knows if you can mail a sample / small item in a letter envelope (to save on shipping, no point paying $5+ to ship it in a box if i can throw it in an envelope and mail it for $0.50)

Thanks for any input!

I dont see why not. Just make sure it cant rip the envelope and watch out for the weight limits.

If you go down to the post office, they keep these things behind the counter.

Called postal clerks.

Ask one of them and they should be able to answer your questions.

All kidding aside, you will have to pay more than a stamp I think, because they have rules for stuff that cant go through the sorting machines (letters with stuff in it - even a paperclip)

You can get little bubble mailers and ship them - it will bring it down to a couple bucks.

I guess it depends a lot on exactly what you are shipping.

Yes, many places do a "If it fits, it ships". As stated before, there are usually weight limits but they are at the extreme.

Also, a business account for my USPS and FEDEX was free and as a result I get discounts. On top of those discounts I get additional discounts for ordering postage online. Good stuff.

You will likely need to pay a non-machinable surcharge if it's of uneven thickness (like mailing a key for example).

The franchisees in the importing business that I sold when I had to retire are still doing this as a marketing method. One of the product lines is a very small, flat metal object, and it sells on quality.

A sample in the envelope works wonders in getting people to open the letter, and then to respond to it. It consistently produces a very high conversion rate. The sample is always attached to either the letter or the two page catalog.

Think Readers Digest.
