I'm feel like I lost a limb by missing this.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I've only missed one. It'll never happen again.

Great, great stuff.

Dale Hensel
Pick up Basketball Etiquette
Follow the DON't SUCK rules to SUCCESS!!

Dress appropriately (don't wear nut huggers), don't wear headbands/wristbands/jewelry
Opinions -- loud mouth, short temper, getting "fouled" on every play, froze out-- just SHUT UP and PLAY
Not the NBA. You were never in it. Open Gym at the Y is not Madison Square Garden. Your glory days are WAY behind you.
T (missed this, I'll get it from Dale)

Shooters-- 15' max range. Shoot only 1-2x a game, MAX. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th options should be to PASS
Unselfish-- let others shoot
Calculate your skill level-- know your limitations Are you really a good shooter? Cam you really make moves off the dribble? Really
Kiss (your a** goodbye) No one will want you on their team if you shoot too much and miss all the time, complain, argue, don't get them open for shots
I actually regret missing this.

Dale's presentation was HILARIOUS. And I think all of us learned something a bit more than etiquette for pick up games.

How to Create Value in your Biz from the Customer's POV

Story of the lady in 23D (Sometimes the internal value of your customers is far, far greater than the business you do w/them).

Was an ironworker. Bought "Websites for Dummies" and got started.

Doesn't know anything about CEO (I think he meant SEO, but this proves his point).

They have 20,000 customers.

Sold work boots. Guys came to his site b/c they knew that HE (Randall) knew what he was talking about, since he was an iron worker.

www.ironworkergear.com

If you google "iron worker tools", you'll see their site at #1 (they've been #1 for 10 years).

hardhatgear.com

Have their own brand of tools (all American made). Rude Dog USA (Randall's last name is Rude).

Doing six figures in several businesses.

The T shirt story alone was worth the price of coming.

Software and Web Design processes and pitfalls

Goal:

REpeatable system that scales and can be delegated
REduces communication erros and assumptions
Stop gaps for iterations
Eliminate Scope creep

Gather business requirements (BR)
Break BRs into Phases (MVP-- minimal viable product)
Design - UX (user experience), -Functional/technical

Tools

Git version Control
Balsimiq wireframing
Trelliq

Business Requirements Spreadsheet:

-list all requirements in a BR list function vs benefit

Break requirements into phases MVP first, outsource MVP to 2+ people/groups
Number BRs by area (UX 1.1)

***

Design document

Each group of BRs should have one or more designs
BR list at top of design document
Number of designs (DSN5)
Overview
Worksflow
Requirements
"The website should allow..." (focus on requirements, NOT specific how tos)

Wireframes only Balsamiq-- wire frames design tool

10 pp Word doc-- BRs on top,

10 to 20 of these documents for a website

Tools:

Github, bitbucket
Balsamiq
Trello-- free visual project management tool

Max Efficiency & Productivity

Why do you always get your best ideas in the shower?

Without active intervention, you reach your max muscle and brain cell performance at age 30.

Quality, Quantity, Focus, and Purpose

Things to work on:

Physical energy
-nutrition, fitness (speed of recovery), sleep, rest and renewal

Emotional Energy (state of mind)

Mental Energy (your capacity)

Spiritual Energy (what you do matters)

********

Practice recovery

Naturally, we are rhythmic beings. We do things up/down, over and over.

How much energy do you need to expend?

Nedal and Federer-- play tennis differently than others. What do they do?

Recovery is the most undervalued elements of performance

Right brain and left brain.

You need to allow for recovery on a regular basis.

Reference-- Tony Schwartz

How to Pay for your BnP trip by the End of the Week ...using direct lead generation via paid advertising

WHo does this apply to?

-reservation and travel industry

LEad based sales

Service business

Information Sales

(not as applicable for product sales, since what you're doing is capturing leads)

What is direct lead generation?

-collection of leads direct from customer- as opposed to buying leads or sourcing them

Advantages of direct vs sourced

-customers want you to sell to them
-less junk leads
-

What is PPC?

google adwords, bingads, etc

You only pay when someone clicks your ad

What do you need to do this??

-a platform for the landing page- your own site, wufoo.com or other hosted platform

-an account w/credit card

-a Service or Product to sell

Research your market/customers

-define keywords that people serach with the intent to buy your service or product
-Defind a price that is of high value to your customers
-Define the information you need from your customers
-Define your sales funnel as efficiently as possible

Landing pages, building your PPC campaign, 5 ads per keyword group, bid for position 1 only, test/test/test

tracking rank daily: http://norrth.com/app/serptracker

(above app is still in beta)

Financial Trading

Gary's history: Got into trading 15 yrs ago. Got serious (but not successful) in 1998. By '99 was getting successful. $28K to 188K in 6 months. Made another $100K in the next year.

Then, managed $10 mil in client money in 2001

Market changes in 9/11 blew up his models. The whole psychology of the market changed.

"Personal issues" forced him to stop for 9 years. After 9 years, "personal issues" divorced him, and he was able to return to investing.

What is trading, what is investing.

Trading is like flipping-- short term speculation (seconds to days)

Investing is more long term

Goal: Catch short term market moves for immediate profit.

Generally based more on analysis of price moves, less on fundamentals

"Isn't that just gambling?" (yeah, kinda). If you have a situation where you have analyzed the performance and can make an ongoing income from it, then it's more lucrative.

Inside the Belly of the Beast (working for Walmart)

Walmart wasn't first.

It wasn't the biggest.

They just *copied* the best practices of those who were market leaders.

In US, 100 MILLION customers visit each week.

in 2010, they had revenues of 400+ BILLION DOLLARS

Today, Walmart has 2 million+ employees

Their #1 best selling item? Bananas (good for trivia games, maybe?)

Walmart accepts No Excuses.

Cut expenses. Be ruthless. Walmart takes each pc of used paper and has pp cut it in 4 pcs, not b/c they can't afford to get note pads-- but to send a message to each and every employee about how agressive they are about cutting costs and waste.

Take credit for saving your clients' money.

The Sundown rule: If tonight by sundown we have some pending business, by sundown I'm going to do my very best to get back to you. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, GET IT DONE BY THE CLOSE OF BUSINESS THAT SAME DAY.

Helps w/all customers, shows that you value them, and keeps things on pace.

TEN FOOT RULE: When you come within 10 feet of a customer, look them in the eye and ask if you can help them.

Sam Walton said:
If you want a successful business, you must have your employees feel like you are working for THEM, not that they are working for YOU.

For this reason, all Walmart execs work on weekends, among other things.

Reason being: You MUST work harder than your competitors.

"Anything that doesn't directly benefiting my customer is a waste of time"

Final point:

It's always being done.

You can do it BETTER.
